Battery dying, I think
Hi all,
Had my Scirocco for 3 weeks now and the battery has just started struggling when starting the car. Took it on 25 mile drive earlier, and when I got in it a couple of hours later, it still struggles. Starts quickly but you can hear the engine turn over slowly.
Can anyone point me out on the best things to check? If its a battery issue then it wont be covered by the warranty, and I'll just go out and buy a new one. However if its an alternator/starter motor issue, then it will be covered.
Thanks in advance
James

Get your hands on a multi meter and measure the output of the battery. Not sure on voltage but I think it's 14v.

I am guessing if I change the battery over myself, will I loose the settings if I disconnect the battery?

Re: Battery dying, I think
With the engine running the voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.4V and without the engine running it should be around 12V.
Battery needs to be tested under load. Just pop into your local fast fit place and ask them to test it. If it's over 5 years old and you have any doubt just buy a new Bosch or Varta one. Much less hassle in the long run

Great thanks, will go a get a multimeter to test. It is 5 years old, so could just need a new battery. Will I cause any problems disconnecting the car from the battery whilst I swap them over? Don't have the radio code so that could be annoying.

As long as the headunit hasn't been retro-fitted you don't need a code.
ESP light will stay on until you drive the car until the Steering Angle Sensor calibrates.

Ok not convinced it's battery then. Engine off, 12.25 volts. Engine on about 14 volts. Starter motor? I'll go get the battery tested at a garage.

Re: Battery dying, I think
Ok so took it to a garage round the corner who very kindly tested it for me. They reckon its knackered and not a problem with the charging.
So went to Euro car parts and bought a new Bosch battery, one that they recommended for the Scirocco. Only problem is it is smaller. length is 246mm, where as the original battery is about 275mm. Have they given me the wrong one?
Thanks

I got this one http://www.eurocarparts.com/mobile/ecp/ ... 43a&000020" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;House wrote:Ok so took it to a garage round the corner who very kindly tested it for me. Fitted in perfectly and noticed the difference straight away when I started the car.
No issue with the radio as long as it's the one that came with the car. You'll just need to drive down your road for the steering to calibrate.

Thanks C00PS. Took battery back to Euro Car Parts before they shut and asked for one of them, unfortunately none in stock, but got the S4 007, which was the right size.C00PS wrote: My battery went not so long ago. All fitted, and drove up the road to clear calibrate the steering. Thanks all
