Potential Dual Mass Flywheel failure?

Post by Kpowell911 »

Good Evening. I've owned my 2012 Scirocco 140TDI Bluemotion for 9 weeks. I've done 1800 miles in this period, and the car itself is now on 48500miles.

After a longish journey I pulled up on my drive and heard a quite bad "knocking". It sounded like a the sort of sound you hear when the bottom end is going/gone, however the car drives and feels fine. A mechanic neighbour said it "sounds like the Dual Mass Flywheel is on its way out/failed, which I understand is pretty common on these :(

I was late for work at this point, so no more has been said about it, and no one else has looked at the car. Im too busy at the moment to get it looked at (till Weds) so Im using my old mans motor in the time being.

However, I may have a limited mechanical knowledge, but do the following symptoms sound like a DMF failure?

The noise is only present when the clutch is fully pressed down. IF the car is idling in neutral there is no noise. Dip the clutch, the knocking comes back.
There is no knocking when moving/driving. The car itself drives PERFECTLY, there is no rumble or vibration though the pedal.
If I start the car in neutral with the clutch deployed (which you need to do to start it) and let the clutch back (in neutral) the revs "jump" up around 100 revs when I get to the bite point?
If I give the throttle a rev to say 2k, as the rev comes down, the knocking noise can be heard maybe once or twice then disappears?
Bear in mind the car is a little over 3 years old and has done less than 50,000 miles.

What do we think?

Secondly, I have 12 months Warranty from Black Horse who I purchased the car from. It specifically states the gearbox IS covered, but Would the flywheel (if it is that) be classed as a consumable? I can see me having fun with this one.....

Thanks Guys

I'd be really surprised if its your Dual mass fly wheel and I've not heard of it being as common as your neighbour makes out, especially at 48000. DMFW are very expensive (at least on petrol engines they are) and should last a lot longer than that.

Not sure that the symptoms suggest DMFW issues and suspect more of a clutch plate or release bearing problem (which is more common).

Do a bit of research on Youtube, looking for videos of people with the same problem (same symptoms and noises) and then go back to the dealer armed with some knowledge of what the issue is.

Don't let the dealer immediately fob you off with the usual wear and tear rubbish (unless it is a worn clutch) because DMFW and release bearing shouldn't really fail at that mileage. If its a failed release bearing then your warranty should cover this (if you stand your ground), worn cutch (probababy not) and DMFW I'm not sure (but I'd complain and stress this is low mileage).

Release bearings and clutch kits are not ridiculously expensive (£200-250), DMFW's are (£800) but its the labour charge that cost the most (£400-600).

Don't forget that if your warranty doesn't cover it, then on principle you can request a good will gesture from VW for the fact that the mileage is maybe too low to be having these issues.

Hope this helps.......I had a issue with my clutch release bearing (manufacturer defect) and after standing my ground, my warranty covered everything.

First of all thanks for the amazing reply! Im not entirely sure where to take it. Its obviously out of VW warranty (albeit by 12 weeks). I bought it from Blackhorse. I have a 12 month warranty and as far as I can tell from reading the warranty book. I take it to any VAT registered garage and they phone through for authorisation?

I've had a dual mass flywheel go on my previous 2 cars. The first car, i was slow getting it sorted and it knackered the gearbox too. That was about £2500 all in to repair. The second was my passat cc. As soon as the garage mentioned the issue i had it booked and repaired before it took the gearbox out too. That only cost me £1200 from VW main dealer. I have also heard about it being a common problem. It seems to affect VW, Vauxhall and Mazdas mainly .

All sorted, warranty had a listen, confirmed and it was booked in within a week.

I put a clutch in for my peace of mind (at cost to me)

Well happy :)

Now a wheel bearings rumbling....
