Oil consumption

Post by fraff13 »

Bought new 2.0 TSi GT Petrol Scirocco. 63 plate
Its now 10 months old, 7000 miles on the clock and already it has guzzled 2 litres of premium grade oil-as 'prescribed' by VW. The oil problem was highlighted by my oil warning light) :eyepop:
Is this right? The technicians claim its a new car and it can be thirsty when 'bedding in'. Really?

Does anyone know of any problems like this with the GT? I had a 1.4 TSi Scirocco before -never had an issue with oil!
Should I book it in to the dealership where I bought it asap? :(

Also-the second time oil warning light came on-I was on M25 near Heathrow-went to nearest VW garage was charged £19.50 for 1 litre of Castrol Edge Professional Longlife III 5W-30. With it came a jazzy zipped wallet with Velcro fittings, gloves and wipes! Time prior to that, when oil warning light came out and I was in a panic-I bought the same oil-1 litre-at VW garage in Tunbridge Wells-£18.50 but this time it was without the jazzy cover and accessories! Getting wise to this malarkey, so in preparation for next time I will need oil I went to local TPS-and lo and behold-for exactly the same oil-1 litre-£8.95! Sickened!

Any advice always welcome!!
Thank you

Not worth taking to the dealer as they will simply point to the reference in the manual which states oil use of 1 litre per 2000KM (1250 miles). This is still ridiculously high and it still says it may use more for the first 3000 miles.

2.5 litres in 7000 miles does seem quite a lot though, is there any smoke evident from the exhaust? It is normally the 1.4 which has been prone to excessive oil consumption, for which you say there were no problems with yours.

I would always expect a new engine to use more oil, especially for the first few thousand miles. I would say if it still 'guzzling' oil by 10K, take it back, but I don't think you will get any help from the dealer at the moment.

Mine is a 58 plate 2.0 tsi and it's used 750ml in the past 5500 miles. Instead of waiting for the oil light to come on check it now and again and top up as necessary, maybe every 1500 miles or so. Do you do long or short journeys and do you push it hard a lot as these would also be factors in consumption.
