Sat Nav Friction Mounts

Post by SeventySix »

Hello

On a recent holiday in the States, we rented a Garmin sat nav and it came with a 'friction mount' which I'd never seen before. Essentially it's a set of connected bean bags with a screen mount and it looks like this:

It was extremely effective, staying in place even around tight corners and it has the obvious benefit of not leaving any dirty marks on the windscreen when it's removed (it folds up nicely too to fit in the glove box).

I have a TomTom and I'd like to get something similar when my new Roc arrives on Friday (unfortunately the Garmin mount isn't compatible). The TomTom version is supplied with an adhesive hook which makes me think it won't be stable enough on its own and for some reason sticking a cheap plastic hook to the dash doesn't appeal.

Halfords sell one made by Sendai which is compatible across makes but having seen it in store seems a bit on large side and some reviewers have complained about its size and lack of friction (apologies for the small pic, only one I can find):

Now I've come across this thing called a NavMat:

It looks like a better size than the Sendai one but I've not seen it in the flesh. Has anyone here tried this one or any other friction mount in a Roc? Are they any good?
