Expert wheel and tire advice

Post by hiviboyi »

So I am no expert but hoping to draw out those that are. I have looked at a few threads on wheel and tire size for MK1’s and it seems there is a recommendation to not install wheels greater in width than 6.5”. In looking for new wheels it seems most come in a 7” width which had me concerned until I checked my existing wheels spinning 205/50’s. Doesn’t seem to cause issues as is but have noticed if I am turning and hitting an very uneven driveway apron the fronts can catch the fender lip. Not a biggie as I now know to take these at slow speeds.

Long story short before I invest in new imported wheels am I making a huge mistake to go 7”,15” wheels it’s 205/50’s? Would love to hear what others have found.

This forum is really focused on the MK3 Scirocco therefore there is not much knowledge on the MK1 and MK2 Scirocco.

I would assume, as well as the width, the offset of the proposed wheel will have an impact. Sorry, I can't offer much help as I sold my MK2 Scirocco GTX back in 1991 and even then, MK1 Sciroccos were relatively rare so I'm surprised there are still any MK1s around.

If you haven't already, you could play around with this site,
