Alarm module - do others work?

Now that my Roc is 10 years old I have the typical non working alarm module showing up in VCDS. Research showed that the batteries in these fail at roughly 7 years and start leaking their acid down onto the circuit board killing it! Sure enough when I took it apart the battery has leaked and the circuit board is shot so just cleaning and putting in a new battery is not feasible.
The same style of alarm is fitted to all of the VW range (plus all Audis, Skodas Mercs etc. etc.) The shape and contacts are identical but the model numbers have varied over the years so I cant see why using a different model still shouldn't work - at least in theory.
I wonder if anyone has fitted a different model number and whether it worked or not?
My one is 1K 895 1605C but a more common version (and more widely available used) is 1K 095 1605a.
Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated.
