Car cuts out then restarts instantly @ low revs.

Post by Kpowell911 »

Hi, first of all let me give a little back ground. I have a 2012 Scirocco Blue motion 2.0 TDI 140 model. The car has done 65,000 miles. I bought the car on 45,000 miles. I have the oil/oil filter/air filter/Pollen filter changed every 10,000 miles regardless of the time scale. The last time I had this done was yesterday. I have not had anything else changed in my ownership other than a Clutch & Dual Mass Flywheel which was done under warranty around 49k. I have obviously had consumables such as the Brakes (I had discs and pads all round yesterday) and tyres. The car has not been back to VW for the recall yet.

I have recently started doing less miles (to the extent my intention is to swap the diesel for a Scirocco R in the summer). I still do a 40 mile round trip on the motorway once a week.

The cars performance and economy is fine. I have just completed a 40 mile round trip, with 4 adults in the car and returned 56mpg according to the trip computer, and there was no issues with performance (one of the passengers commented on how powerful it felt despite been a 140 bluemotion).

So whats the problem. Every now and then (id say once a day), the car will cut out or go to cut out. It will instantly restart without me touching the key, and no lights or anything comes on the dash. Sometimes I can "catch" it and give it more throttle and keep it going. The best example of this I can give is. You know your car after 2 years. You know when youre driving about what gear you need to be in for what etc. You dont think, you just 'know". Well whilst Ive had this problem its almost as if im learning to drive a new car. Lets say youre approaching an island, youre still in motion but slowing down, youre in 2nd or 3rd gear (im not looking at revs, but id imagine im around 2k) and its clear so you can go without stopping so you go back onto your accelerator. Occasionally, when I do this theres nothing there for a second or so. It will either cut out and restart, or "jolt" without quite cutting out. I know very little about cars, but it feels like the fuel isnt there for a second or so?

Now on two occasions, its cut out completely. Ive had to turn the key. The one time it started right up. The second time It cranked over for a good 20 seconds (fairly violently shaking). An error about start stop came then the car started up and off I went no problems?

Obviously somethings not right. A Google has just confused me more. From MAF sensors, to resetting Fuses, to Injectors to fuel pumps. The most accurate "google" Ive found is this from The Times newspaper!

https://www.driving.co.uk/car-clinic/ca ... tting-out/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That question is nigh on identical to my experience, but why havent I noticed it in the 2 years IVe owned the car.

Ive not spoke to a garage yet, but my fiance's dad owns a fairly decent one. He is the guy who does my services etc. I havent had the fuel filter changed on the service as I heard it requires a special computer (he may well have this equipment, but I didnt want to rock up with the parts in case he couldnt) Could it be that?

Im perplexxed!

Thanks

You should start with a fault scan and replacing the fuel filter is also a good idea.
Just start from there to get any clues.
