Hello,
I was driving to the cinema today using the satnav on my RNS510 and suddenly it appeared to just switch off - screen went black and no sound coming out. I couldn't turn it back on again, tried the reset key combo (both arrows and the star in the top right) and nothing. Only thing I've noticed is it sounds a bit like the CD player is trying to read something as there is an occasional whirring/buzzing sound. As I was on my way to the cinema I left it and tried again after the film (couple of hours) and it still won't turn on and is making the same sounds.
Has anyone got any ideas about what might cause this and how I could fix it? I've done some googling and can only find slightly different issues where people get the welcome screen come up still - this doesn't happen for me, it just stays black. Would be good if I could fix this without going to a dealer as I expect they'll charge me a bomb to fix it... My car is a 60 reg sirocco GT 2.0tsi.
Many thanks,
Neil

Re: RNS510 won't turn on
Whirring sound could be the cooling fan on the rear. After that it would be guesswork as to why it's died, but there's a couple in my workshop gone the same way. Usually it's the main board which dies, or even worse the radio board which kills the main board. In either case it's usually a better idea to buy a new unit, as a main board is over £200 plus fitting and reloading maps etc.
Dealer will not fix it, but will simply volunteer to sell you a new one. Be cheaper to buy one elsewhere.

Thanks. I should probably add that the same thing happened a few months ago on the way to work but it seemed to have resolved itself by the time I drove home. Not sure if this is just it slowly dying?
Re: RNS510 won't turn on
Generally hardware faults (such as this would appear to be) are not going to get any better. Software faults can be remedied by reloading the software, but this is not of that style of fault. You could remove the unit, unclip the Quadlock and reseat it again, see it it's perhaps a loose connection, but after that there's not a lot more can be done from a distance. There's also a 20a fuse on the rear inside the quadlock connector, but I've never known one blow. You might be lucky and be the first though.

Re: RNS510 won't turn on
So quick update - as of this morning it's turning on again however the colours have gone very odd, all purple and green. Are there any good places to get replacement units and are they easy to fit or is it best I go to a dealer/specialist?
Re: RNS510 won't turn on
I have one in the sales section mate. As for fitting. it's a simple one out, one in and coding with vcds to make it all work correctly.
