Looking for opinions. Heading up the M6 in torrential rain and wind, the (aftermarket) passenger side wiper blade broke off leaving just the plastic mounting block wiping over the glass. Obviously couldn't stop nor could I switch off wipers and end result is what looks like a scratched opaque line across the sweep arc of the blade. (Quite surprising that plastic would damage glass in this way). So my questions are:
1. Is this sort of damage under these circumstances likely to be claimable on my insurance (I have windscreen cover)?
2. If not, is it likely to be repairable (and how much is it likely to cost)?
3. If not, (gulps), how much is a replacement screen likely to cost?

1. Yes, no reason why not.
2. You can get glass polish, it's a cutting compound which removes marring on the glass. It probably won't get rid of a deep cut, but it's worth a try. You could also try filling the scratch after polishing. Neither product will cost you much and the polish especially is good to have around and use once or twice a year to keep it looking flash.
3. Usually £70 excess with windscreen cover.

Thanks both - wasn't sure that wiper damage would be covered as it could be viewed as being neglect rather than accidental damage (although in my case, definitely wind damage).

Re: Windscreen advice
Just advise u need a windshield replaced as opposed to giving insurer the story, just in case they wiggle out on basis of reasonable precautions . Defo go via insurance as privately ws not cheap

Re: Windscreen advice
I don't want to scaremonger, but some years ago I put a load of scratches in my Audis windscreen with an ice scraper that had a notch in it due to being dropped. My insurance company (Swinton) would not cover it as it wasn't a crack/chip, I lived with it for a couple of months before chopping it in.
You could always "accidentally" drop the wiper arm onto the screen whilst replacing the lost blade?

Re: Windscreen advice
My local garage/MOT station have confirmed that it won't be an MOT fail as scratching not too obstructive. They also suggested accidentaly dropping a hammer on it - even offered to lend an appropriate hammer!
