Hi,
I'm looking to by my first Scirocco in about a month, but I was put off by the stories I've heard of major engine failure (Most stories first hand unfortunately). But someone told me it was only the Super and Turbocharged 1.4 engine that suffered, and that the basic turbo was fine - as was the 2.0 TSI. I've also heard that the cars from 2010 on were updated and better.
Also does the 122 have any other faults that are worth mentioning? Any years that are better or worse, or what to look out for?
Any useful advice/information is appreciated.
Thanks,
Corey

The CAXA engine in the 122ps is far less likely to have problems - some do but no where near the frequency of the twincharged CAVD engines.
The problems with the twincharged engines were mainly down to incorrect spark plugs fitted from factory, early piston production problems, a batch of faulty injectors and coil packs...and the fact that at 160ps pre-detonation and misfires were more likely, and when you combine them with the issues just mentioned it all lead to an engine that was likely to fail.
The 122ps CAXA on the other hand uses different spark plugs, that never had an issue. Slightly different pistons (diff part number) - so they escaped the production issues.
The batch of faulty injectors and coil packs could still affect the 122ps, but it was within a certain date range (i can't remember off hand)...but again even this didn't cause engine failures on the 122ps, just misfires which would be obvious and hence have gotten fixed by the dealer.
Finally if you get a 2012 or later version then regardless if its the twincharged 160ps or 122ps - all the above issues were fixed by then.

the 122 version is known for turbo problems, wastegate is sticking then you have boost problems and you need new turbo then...
I had twice that problem...
