Cam chain tensioner inspection / replacement

Post by seanaldo1987 »

Alright folks, this ones for the 2.0 TSI guys.

Been doing a little research to find out cam belt change intervals as my car is on 60k and found that my 2.0 TSI Rocco is infact, a chain driven engine (was news to me)

What sort of time scale / mileage does the cam chain tensioner need inspected and / or a replacement fitted? I'm sure i've seen 6yrs / 100k somewhere, just thought it might be worth asking you guys on here.

I know there are known issues with the tensioners, so is it worth changing it anyway for peace of mind?

Thanks in advance

There is no recommended schedule to change cam chains as they are supposed to.last the life of the engine. It's relatively expensive to change, so is normally only done if there is an issue with it. As you say there are known issues with tensioners, so it's worth having that changed for peace of mind. If the chain stretches you can measure it using VCDS. It will also trigger an EML with a Cam Position Fault.

I have 80 k km currently on my 09 2.0 tsi and for some time now, I was under the impression that I hear the chain rattle. I went to check it out at the vw dealership, and they've confirmed that the sound was coming from the chain, which has been stretched.
So, both chain and tensioner will be changed. It is not cheap, but definitely cheaper than if the chain broke, which could result in extreme situation in changing the hole engine.
