MFD showing error start stop - advice please

Post by Roc Hopper »

Hi guys
Whilst driving Walter back from this mornings parkrun I got an error come up on the MFD saying error start stop & the engine management light has come on
My first call was to my local dealer but the service department are all on Easter break til Tuesday - typical
Walter is still covered by a third party warranty from the (non VAG) dealer that I bought him from last April (still in warranty but only just) so I'll give him a call this afternoon & put him on notice that there's an issue but does anyone know if I should still be driving him or is it best to play it safe & leave him on the drive ?
Final piece f possibly pertinent info is the MFD is also telling me a service is due in 12 days or 1900 miles
Cheers guys & happy Easter

I had something similar just last month. (although no engine light, just start stop error) After a week at the dealers and the cause and rectification were quite inconclusive. They eventually just cleaned up the 2 Camshaft sensors and the fault went away.

Thanks for the reply Marty I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this !
I took Walter in to the MD on Easter Saturday & the service staff were all out for Easter, so I contacted the warranty people (Customer Protect) who advised me to take it to Halfords.
The fault code they came back with was P040300 a fault with the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Im told) They reset the lights saying the fault may recur - which it did the first time i stopped at a junction and put him into neutral.
The long and the short is Customer Protect have honoured the warranty - which is surprising without quibble ( added bonus - pretty good considering it runs out tomorrow) and agreed to replace the part and pay for the labour up to a value of £500 - I'm expecting the bill to be north of this figure but I shouldn't be out more than a hundred of so £ which is better than the alternative.

Funny thing though - I've been advised its ok to drive him and on Saturday after coming back from a run the stop start worked perfectly - weird but its always been a bit hit and miss so maybe it was there all along? Either way better to get it done now i think.

Hi Roc Hopper,

I'm having the same issue with my Scirocco, MFD showing stop/start error and engine management light has come on.. A fault with the EGR valve is showing for me too.

I see you got the EGR replaced.. Did this work for you and have you had any problems since?
