Long journey on the roc ? Thru europe

Post by nemerkh »

Hello

We drive often to Latvia to visit family (latvia is just before Russia -for orientation purposes :) )
Last couple of years we used our x-Touareg whuch was excellent on snow Berlin onwards but well heavy on fuel and tyres (4000 miles round trip).
We have a bmw 530d 08 and an 09 Roc 2.0tdi140. The latter being really good on fuel esp on long journeys.

I would go with the bimer am sure itll be comfy for the kids and safer? Probably.
I would like to hear your experiences on long journey thru europe maybe if someones done it? How comfy? Any mechanical problems? Fuel? Anyone done it with kids? How donis feel on autobahns and so on..
Appreciate your help.
Merry xmas and a happy new year.

Take the Roc! You won't be disappointed.
We did a Europe trip in ours last year (ferry to Holland then Germany, Austria, Italy etc) and it was absolutely fantastic.
2600 miles altogether and no mechanical issues whatsoever and averaged over 50mpg even with some autobahn fun and gunning it up mountains! :D
Super comfy too - we spent a couple of 7hr days in the car and had no aches & pains at the end of the day. Hook up an iPod to the car system and happy days.
Enough luggage space for the two of us - might be pushed for a family though depending what you're carrying.
No worries at all on the autobahn - first time I've really had the chance to open it up - put the ACC into 'Sport' and it felt rock-solid in the bends even at well over 100mph. (of course we were overtaken regularly by big BMWs and Porsches doing 170 plus but they weren't doing as many to the gallon! :p ).
The only thing I would say is that I was well pleased I had cruise control fitted beforehand - well worth it.
Hopefully we'll be doing something similar this year.

Take the Scirocco! I live in Poland and once or twice a year I drive to the UK. IT's a great long distance cruiser, not as harsh as people think, and no problems on the Autobahn at all. Last year I drove from Olsztyn (around 120 miles from Lithuanian border) to Fort William, did a bit of touring around and travelled 3200 miles in a week. No problems at all! Plus I have an R so yours should be more comfortable, and definitely more economical!

Enjoy!!

I'd take the 530d for a number of reasons:-

More room for people especially in the back.
More room for luggage
More refined so not as fatiguing
It probably has cruise control fitted
The rising window line on a Roc makes it difficult for kids to see out of in the back which can lead to car sickness on longer journeys

No doubt a Scirocco is easily capable of such a trip and will be more economical but the BMW will be much more comfortable.

Well thanks guys. The replies are brilliant but ill have to weigh the matters. The bimer must be more comfy but the problem is that ill probably have a supercharged ego behind the wheel causing fast challenging driving with mu wofe screaming at me. I bet the 3 ltr tdi wont average close to 50 mpg due to that fact. Paradoxically ill be calmer and more eco on the roc. Am more than sure that my 2 ltr would be more than capable of this journey. Am gonna have gonna have think abt it and decide. Plus given that its proper winter am sure the fwd would only be a plus.
So far the roc but ill give you guys an update. Have a great 2014 all of you and your beloved ones!
