Buying advice please!!
Buying advice please!!
Hello everyone!
getting my Scirocco on Monday now.
basically, had a fiat 500s (for me wife, i am a proud hardcore BMW person, owning an e60 530d, but i love VWs as well, am also gonna be using the Sciro as i love it!)) on finance brand new from the main dealer. 6 months later regretted buying it as its underpowered as ****!
anyways after a few journeys to the fiat dealer came across today a Black Sciro 09 2.0TDI GT thats done 50k for a price to sell!
we loved the vw after the test drive, obviously not as nice as my bimer, but a real pleasure to drive, settled the finance and basically acquired the scirocco - awaiting Prep. (with that we got a 12 months insurance and a full years road tax)
I have noticed a wheelbearing like sound on test drive from the rear, and the steering wheel was off, needs alignment.
The dealer chap (official fiat dealer) said he will fix all that and prep it properly before giving it.
NOW; been reading all pm abt the sciro. i have owned golfs and a passat sel 2.0 170 which i loved tbh, but i really need your guidance on what to look for beforei seal the deal tmrw.
its a: 2009 2.0TDI GT 140bhp
several questions so please bear with me:
- are all 2.0tdi GTs blue motion?
- do all of them come with DCC or ACC(chasis control) as standard? i presume mine has got it as i have the button in
-correct me if am wring but am almost sure it has got a cambelt which is not chain, but when is the service due?
- will it definately have the damned DPF?
*my passat was a 56 reg 2.0 tdi 170 and blew off several injectors at 40-50k, am I at high risk of getting that? is the 2.0 tdi the better one in 2009 than the previous one?
*what do i look for with regards to the DCC as i heard it could be an expensive fix, and is it a common fault for it to go ?
*i understand the clutch, the flywheel, turbo and egr is just an aging process that we all go through is there anything else on this particular car i have to look out for on delivery or inspection?
good thing is that they gave me a full 12 months warranty, but still i dont want them to wear and tear every part of the car when it comes to fix...
I would really appreciate your advice, thank a lot!
NICK.

Re: Buying advice please!!
Hi Nick, I don't think an 09 Roc will be Bluemotion as think it came out later than that. All GT models come with Adaptive Chasis Control as standard. I believe it is a cambelt but the first change is not due for approx. 100k from memory. Would think it will have the DPF unless previous owners had it removed? If you are talking about DSG (Auto) rather than DCC then yes they are expensive to fix if they go wrong but some people on here would not be without it, personally I am a manual guy.
Wheel bearing noise will probably just be sawtoothing on rear tyres where they are worn unevenly, mine has this and the wheelbearings have been checked and are fine.
Cant really comment on whether tdi any good as I have a petrol.

Re: Buying advice please!!
Thanks for your reply mate. By dcc i meant acc, the active chassis that is rather than cruise control.
Mine is a manual, and am getting confused now as i heard different stories abt the cambelt. Some say its after 4 years and some say after 100k, others say whichever come first. The reason why am stressing on it is cause am having my roc prepped as we speak ill get it on Monday and the fiat dealer said mine will have a service and cambelt will be checked and if needed it will be replaced. I have told them the 4 yrs thingy but they wont have it.
Also wanted to ask is hill assist optional or standard as i havent noticed it on test drive.
Another thing thats worrying me, this car has only on service stamp from the vw dealer marked as long life. Its dine 50k so far hence am worried the prev owner might have driven it for around a year of service due.

Re: Buying advice please!!
With regards to the cambelt VW Germany state it should be replaced at 120k miles. This is outlined in tje service booklet.
VW UK specify it should be changed after 4 years for cars registered before 9/2009 and 5 years for post 9/2009 cars irrespective of mileage. Some would say.that this policy is just a revenue generator.
Even on longlife service regime the maximum the car should do without a service is 18,600 miles (30,000 km) or 24 months.

Re: Buying advice please!!
Thanks. Well with regards to the cambelt ill wait and see what they tell me.
As for the service i know its overdue. Prev owner probably though ots a one off service
Upon testdrive i couldnt detect anything major albeit the power deliver was smooth and consistent.
Well hopefully fiat will do a proper job servicing it. Ill post an update.

Re: Buying advice please!!
well been on the phone with the fiat dealer. basically he said the wheel bearing like sound is 2 worn rear tyres that he is changing. he said the car had a full service, but also that they have checked the cambelt and it was in a very good condition and wasnt required to be changed.
obviously i have mixed feelings about this thing as its not as per UK standards, but as per German ones
obviously am buying a car from a formal dealer, what would you do in my situation?
my plan is to drive it till the next oil service and change the cambelt then regardless, does this sound reasonable?

Re: Buying advice please!!
Hmm, re cambelt - I always say "Who would you take the advice from - the German company that designs and manufactures the cars or a foreign company with an import franchise"?
I would be far more concerend about the serviceing - or lack of it. Very few Rocs are driven to a regime that makes them suitable for 'Longlife' servicing. The vast majority need a service at every 10,000 miles/one year (whichever comes first). My car was registered 4 Jan 2012, it then had its first service on 4 January 2013 and today I booked it in for its second one on, yes you guessed it... 4 January 2014!

Re: Buying advice please!!
You had injector problems on the passat as that was one of the old PD diesels, these common rail units don't suffer from injector problems or DPF problems (unless you only do short trips)
Much more reliable than the last generation of VW Diesel engines

yes i agree the lack of service evidence did concern me, hence i popped by my local VW dealer and gave them details. they confirmed the car was on a long service regime and is due service around "nowish" i still think there is a big gap. on a positive note, the fiat dealer am buying the car from said its all been serviced with no issues. i dont personally believe in long life service, i will do that every 10k. maybe for the first time ill just do it after winters gone 2014. most importantly all the filters and oil would be changed for now and they said the cambelt looks good. fingers crossed.

yes i was surprised cause my passat which was a 170 blasted her injectors at around 40k! luckily its was under warranty. as for the DPF i think it will be clean at all times
Re: Buying advice please!!
Is tyre wear in the rear common for these cars?

Treaad stepping is common on the rear of a number of VAG cars. Some types of tyres are more prone to it than others.nemerkh wrote:Is tyre wear in the rear common for these cars?
Re: Buying advice please!!
Right!! Got my roc. Loving it big time. Do t wanna get into my bimer for some time now. Everything works as it shld.
Only2 things
The steering wheel is off to the right so probably needs alignment
Second thing is that after connecting my iphone to the cable, the sound is very distorted, as if it needs amplification. Not happy with that as i have my music on my iphone.
Ill get you some fotos later on
Thanks guys for your replies.

Re: Buying advice please!!
I have a rear tyre bearing noise, and a rear tyre wearing slightly more on the inside than the other side, my local specialist has told me it may be the rear bushes??
Re: Buying advice please!!
Yes it makes sense with the bushes. Is it knocking on potholes?
Re: Buying advice please!!
Also guys i wanted to ask, i have my lights on even if the switch is set to off. I cant seem to find a running daylight option in my mfd menu. Is that normal?
Re: Buying advice please!!
Unless you have xenon lights the 'DRL' function cannnot be turned off without VCDS (a commercial computer programme that a number of forum members use). Full info is here:
http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/roccop ... ing_Lights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A lot of us have restored the light switch to normal operation , including auto on/off function, using VCDS. A quick search of 'DRL' or 'Headlights stuck on' willl reveal a lot of information (and anguish!).
