Vibration from Brake Pedal

Post by carmanvw »

Hi Forum,
In the last couple of weeks I've begun to notice an annoying vibration/ grinding feeling when using the brake pedal. I don't think it related to previous threads indicating brake dust as the cause. I have tried heavy braking just to check if there's any other symptom, such as new sound etc, but this has not brought anything new nor has it cured the problem.
The car is kept clean, and each time I hand wash the car myself and pay attention to the wheels and the brake callipers. I'm guessing this could be more than just brakes, possibly wheel bearing etc. anyone any ideas, or anyone notice the same. I know there's supposed to be energy regeneration while braking, but I don't think it should feel this rough. I may go to main dealers for a drive in a demo to compare- this is my second, and the first didn't suffer from this, with similar mileage 12,000km.

Silly question are the pads fine, plenty of meat left? no nasty deposits on the discs?

Not a silly question, makes sense. Yeah, plenty of brake pad left all round, And I normally get high miles from my brakes, and there's no visible deposits on the discs. Again, I do pay attention to both when cleaning the car to get rid of build up. I've another year almost of warranty so I'll keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse, and then its back to vw.

It could simply be a warped disc, although unusual at that mileage but not unknown.

No rust lip on the discs? could you have a small and relatively flat stone trapped between the pad and disc.

i think the warped disc sounds possible, but it doesnt do much emergency or hard braking. im keeping an eye on it, and im starting to feel the same vibration from the accelerator pedal. so it could be related to wheel bearings, although there is no sound coming from the bearings.
worst thing about this kind of thing is that once you notice it the first time, you just keep being aware of it. im gonna just see if it gets worse or shows any other signs before i get it looked at. might be an idea to do what ive heard recommended for so many things- go to the main dealer and test drive a new or even used scirocco to see if there's any difference.
Also, in relation to the suggestion if small stone trapped between disc and pad, hopefully not, but the little stone must like it there cos its there a while :-), but don't think that's it either, there's no scoring on the discs to suggest that's the problem.
