Scirocco help .. So Confused :s

Post by Youngmiller »

Im 21 years old and just coming up to my 4th year no claims in a few weeks, iv always loved the Scirocco since it came out and have decided that I am going to treat myself and finally get rid of my god forsaken 1.2 Clio ;).

Iv checked insurance and for some strange reason my prices are coming out as follows;

1.4 TSI 122BHP £850
2.0 TDI 140BHp £1200
1.4 TSI 160BHP £750

I just haven't got a clue why the faster petrol engine comes out cheapest yet is the highest insurance group, iv tried quotes with a range of sciroccos to confirm this and the prices come out the same ish.

So I just want opinions really, iv been looking at a 160BHP petrol about 2yo, and theres a few at aroung 13750 to 14000 from dealers. Is this a good price or do you think I could get a deal paying cash. Plus is there any extras I should specifically be looking at to try and get on other than the obvious ones(Interlagos 18").

Thanks for any Help given !!

Hi!!

Well I bought a brand new 170 gt in September and I paid £900 insurance.. And I'm 20 with 3 years no claims.
I found that it was more expensive for me to insure a 170 golf than it was a scirocco.

All based on where you live as well. There's a website somewhere that shows you the insurance rating for the area you live in. I've always found car insurance abit of a black spot and it never seems to make much sense.

Before the roc I was driving a 1.4 Polo with 65BHP, went to a Scirocco 2.0 GT TSi with 200 BHP, insurance only went up 15 quid a month yet for me to get on my mums diesel golf with 140 bhp was much more.

Can't understand why the 160 bhp is £100 cheaper than the 122 bhp :rolleyes:

Insurance prices are not dictated by the car's power output.

What is the main driving force if not engine output? I was similarly surprised...

The 122ps engine hasn't been out as long as the 1.4TSI(160), and is less popular, so there are fewer out there for the risk assessors to glean data from. This may be one reason, another reason might be if the 122PS comes with inferior brakes to the higher models (don't know whether it does), and perhaps the stats wizards have decided that higher output models with better brakes are safer than lower powered models with inferior brakes? :shrug: There are far too many factors to consider in insurance risk determination and combined they make absolutely no logic to us on the outside. My Scirocco insurance came down 25% this year and absolutely nothing has changed in my circumstances.

I did not know that re brakes - is it only the 122PS brakes that are less effective? Presumably the R has even better than GT, R-Line etc?
