The infamous rattly tailgate - TPI!

Post by Billc »

My beastie was in for service today and I mentioned a rattling tailgate (yeah, I know it's the buffers which I've not been able to fix by adjusting them). They found a TPI on it and sorted it warranty-wise.

Anyone else with the rattling tailgate can now point them at TPI 2023774/1

Hope this helps someone.

TPI is adjustment only. Replacement is not via this route. Looks like you have had goodwill/3year general warranty from the dealers on finding a damaged set.

When I booked it in I mentioned the tailgate, she nodded and said "Yep, that'll be the buffers, I'll fill out a warranty job card". On the report it just says "checked and confirmed rattle. TPI 2023774/1, followed test plan and replaced boot buffers". So that to me says it was an expected and normal result from their POV. I'm not saying that the TPI says automatic replacement but simply that it's proof of what is now an acknowledged fault and one shouldn't be fobbed off with 'can't find anything wrong sir' or 'they've been damged by slamming the lid sir" .

Just booked my Scirocco into West London VW for its 3 year service, mentioned the tailgate rattle/squeak, and was quoted £140 for one hour of Investigation time to determine what the problem was. Shameful.

£140 just to have a look, your being far to kind describing that as shameful.
