Judder and Rev-Counter Delay

Post by Gilez »

I am not sure if I am imaging this, as I have only just noticed it, but the other day I noticed that the rev counter seemed to have a bit of a delay from idle to 1000-1500 revs and seemed to almost jump rather than sweep to those revs and then back again. After 1500 it is fine and sweeps around no problem.

I was trying it yesterday sat in neutral and noticed that the engine seemed to judder when tapping the accellerator, which I am not sure is right, although once it hits 1500 it is fine. I havent noticed it in nearly 18 months, but I am not sure if it is a charateristic of the engine only managing to get to 1000-1500 revs before i take my foot off the peddle. Strange how it seems to tally up with the rev counter problem though.

Has anyone else had or noticed this in their 170 manual diesel?

can't say I've noticed this in my 170 but I'll have a look and report back tomorrow!

Hmmm... well I had a look and I wouldn't say the needle "jumps" up the first 500 rpm. It certainly goes through them very quickly but I wouldn't say it wasn't smooth. No real judder either (well no worse than I would expect from a diesel!

I tries it this morning and it seemed OK when cold, so will check again when I get home and see what it does. Might have to thrash it on the motorway first though to warm it up a bit :D
