Heatsoak
I just had a remap, revo stage 1 on my Scirocco 1.4 tsi 160.
No I believe it suffers from heatsoak.
Is that harmfull to the engine??
What can I do about it besides removing the remap?
Thanks!
MJ

Re: Heatsoak
I would doubt very much that your mildly tuned 1.4 is suffering from heatsoak.
A stage 1 remap will have little or no effect as the gains are modest and unless your hammering it around a track everyday, will have no impact on engine temperatures.
Also, there is an electrically operated coolant pump that circulates coolant after you switch off the engine to prevent this.

Re: Heatsoak
Heat soak is not the engine itself getting hot...it's the charged air getting warmer as a result of increased boost causing the stock IC to work harder in cooling the air before entering the engine.
But as blue says...what makes u think it's suffering from heatsoak??
I gotta say my Forge Twintercooler comes into it's own in these warmer months. Engine still buzzing round to the redline with no probs.

Re: Heatsoak
Oh if u really think u have heatsoak, u can do the following to combat it:
Bigger IC
Extra IC - like the Forge T'cooler
IC Water Spray system
IC NOS Spray Bar system
Water Methanol injection
Nitrous Oxide injection
Proper cold air intake
Or turn down the boost but that's boring.

Re: Heatsoak
Hi Again!
The revo guy told me it was heatsoak I have never heard of it before!
The problem I have explained to him is: The engine loses power now when it is getting hotter outside.
In the morning it is running great but later during the day it loses power...
I drive normaly but like to use the extra power ofcourse!
Is that heatsoak or something else? Is it harmfull to the engine?
Greatfull for all the help I can get!

Re: Heatsoak
It just means you make less power when it's hot, quite simple really.
Should you be worried? No.
As has been said previously, a bigger intercooler would help, but most people live with it. When it gets cooler it will be fine!

Re: Heatsoak
You're right in this case but I still think of heatsoak being the build of temperature after the engine is turned of, which can cause starting issies due to fuel evaporation etc...Chungster wrote:Heat soak is not the engine itself getting hot...it's the charged air getting warmer as a result of increased boost causing the stock IC to work harder in cooling the air before entering the engine.

Re: Heatsoak
Yes I am from sweden but there is a revo delaer in denmark that has done my remap.
The temperature where I stay is around 20 degrees celsius at the moment!

Re: Heatsoak
i've not heard of too many people complaining about heatsoak post remap on that engine...but it is possible for any force induction engine if boost is high / cooling system insufficient for that stage of tuning. but not saying the OE IC can't cope with Revo S1.
Get this if it worries you that much.

Re: Heatsoak
If you guys say it is not harmfull then I am ok with it.
I dont want to make any hardware upgrades. I just realy wanted a software upgrade for fun. Whe I had this "problem" I got a bit worried thats all! I dont want to ruin my engine, who does?
Thanks for your help!

Looks great!
If I hade my Revo dealer closer and if I felt confident with him I would consider doing the same!
I wanted Revo thats why I took a chance using him still he was a bit far away

Worrying?
Who are you to judge?
Ofcourse I worry when I realize things are happening to my car. Besides the Revo dealer is hard to get hold of (sorensen performance)Even Revo UK wont comment the situation.

Re: Heatsoak
Not that I know anything about this hoganb but it seems to me that you do have some cause for concern.
A remap that only works in cold weather ain't a lot of use. And how do you go on when it starts to get really warm out there, its only spring now.
I don't recall anyone else on this forum having raised this problem before. I think you're right to try and get to the bottom of it and I wouldn't be too happy with this either.

Re: Heatsoak
hoganb heatsoak has different meanings to people in reality your car will suffer from heatsoak whether its mapped or stock
the true definition is when the engine temps continue to rise for a short while when you turn the engine off which also warms the bay and things like intake system etc, hence why your fan kicks in on warm days, running your car on a dyno with poor fans and driving at slow speeds on a warm day will see similar issues, warm air entering your intake has the efect of blunting performance
revo do differ from a lot of tuners in the fact they don't map on a dyno, their development is done on road/private track so they measure how the car performs in the real world, rather than rely on a dyno with a sh#t fan, revo definately performed better on warm days than my previous map
people have been running mapped roccos for a couple of years and 1.4 is merely pumping out stock 2.0tsi figures when mapped , none of the tuners require additional hardware for stage 1 but adding hardware needless to say does help
in summary you had heatsoak before it was mapped and will still have it, i've pulled this simple explanation on reduced power from the Stage 1 thread i started

revo carl wrote:To put it as simply;
The cooler the intake temps the more power then engine can make, the turbo can also flow more air as it's cooler
The higher the intake temps the less air the turbo can flow and the more likley the car is to pull power out to save itself from excessive cylinder temps etc, just to protect itself from detonation and all the other potential horrors that can happen when an engine is under high load at high operating temps
Hope that clears it up a little for you

I've been an engine tuner and Revo dealer for 8 years, that's how I'm to judge.hoganb wrote:Worrying?

Serious heatsoak usually occurs when the ambient temperature is hot (typically 30C +) and you are running the car hard, or there is a fault in your cooling system, if your fans had failed they would throw a fault, your temperature guage would be over 90C and you would have temperature warning lights showing.
The excess heat 'soaks' to the intercooler which draws hot air into the induction system which reduces power.
As wigit says this happens whether the car is remapped or not.

Re: Heatsoak
heat soak is best seen at GTI International on a warm sunday afternoon, car thrashed on 1/4 mile and then you spend 40 mins queuing for next run and people wonder why times dont improve
hogan its similar to your brakes, if you have a hard drive and stop you get the burning smell etc and sometimes a bit of smoke when you have stopped because you are no longer cooling them so temperature rises, hence why after a thrash a nice gentle wind down cools things down
