Getting ice and snow off car without scratching

Hi all,

Had to get all the solid ice off of the car yesterday and used buckets of slightly warm water to wash it all. Was worried it might drag any dirt over the car and mark the gloss but turned out ok.

Any tips or won't ice do much damage?
