Tracker
Hi guys,
after reading a thread about someone's house who has broken into and assault for his Roc. I would like to get my car tracked, where is the best and cheapest place to do this. Is it a silent tracker, how do they work?
Thanks.

Re: Tracker
I would think about why you want a tracker before getting one. A tracker wouldnt deter someone breaking into your house for your keys, as they probably wouldnt know the car had one in the first place.
I looked into getting one in the hope of reducing my car insurance premium, but it didnt make the slight bit of difference so i figured there was no point in spending the cash.

I can rely on my car, it's my Roc!!!

Re: Tracker
Would you want it back once it's been nicked anyway? I had a tracker on my Porsche as my insurance insisted upon it, but I've not even thought about one for the 'Roc. I'd rather spend the extra money (about £350 to fit and £125 a year thereafter) on my insurance and lower the excess, and making sure that I have decent cover - something like that.
But yes, they're silent - effectively a few GPS transponders so when the car's taken the Police can then locate it (provided the system hasn't been over ridden or the car not hidden somewhere with no signal). As I said though, I wouldn't bother - either better insurance, or maybe home security (CCTV, house alarm, a full-blown panic room? An AK-47?)...

Re: Tracker
I agree with the comments here, most insurance companies dont give you a discout for installing a Tracker. And like stated if someone steals it do you really want it back ?
Have a look at the clifford black jaxx systems, they will stop anyone driving your car for any sort of distance b4 it cuts out...

Re: Tracker
Have a Tracker. I can set it to sms me if the car is moved more than x meter.
I use this when reluctantly leaving it at the dealer for service etc.
Just to make sure its not hooned.
An I like to do the same when i'm flying out for more than a few days

Re: Tracker
I have a tracker, cost £230 and installed it myself. Has a whole range of setting from geo-fencing to motion detection. I have it set up to "report in" by GPRS every 24 hours so I know that its working and that costs me about 1.5p per day. Shows up its location on a map on my PC.
If it is stolen I can send a text message asking it to send me its location immediately or once every few seconds or minutes. I can also connect to it by phone and hear what's going on in the car - a sort of one-way phone call.
Although there is a lot of good sense in what peeps say about not wanting a stolen car back, especially when its been screwed, on the other hand quite often cars that are stolen to order are treated less harshly and are usually dumped not far away and left for a couple of days. This usually lets the thieves tell if its got a tracker fitted by if / how long it takes to be reclaimed . In such cases recovering your car might be a reasonable option. By having a low cost tracker installed I have the potential option of reclaiming the car if I want or if its trashed then not bothering.
Bearing in mind how long it can take to get your insurance claim payout (they can make you wait weeks to see if the car turns up first) and then how long you might have to wait for a replacement car, especially if you want another Roc. That's a lot of inconvenience. Add to that the cost of increased insurance premiums for the next 5 years for a complete vehicle loss - balanced against a claim for just new locks and keys.
There are no simple answers to car theft headaches.

I am using an old iPhone with the "Find my iPhone" GPS feature and it gives me a live update through google maps. Already powered through the car and can be discreetly tucked away

Re: Tracker
You can track it either via a web site set up by the manufacturer (which I think is free indefinitely) or via their program on your PC.182_blue wrote: can you track this with an iphone ?
The PC program gives you more control over the device remotely but only works on windows PCs.
The web site can be accessed by any PC or Mac, so I don't see why it shouldn't be accessible using an iphone.
Edit - Yes you can. I've just tried it on my iPod Touch. Although there is a bit of a lag when moving around the maps.

Re: Tracker
It's a pity these trackers dont come with an electrode option, allowing you to fry the b'stards remotely from your computer as they're making their getaway in your car.
