That time of year again...

Post by yellowplum »

Well it's winter tyre time...I have a question regarding a set of alloys I had to get from Rial as VW Germany wouldn't ship a set of Winter Tyres to the UK

The recommended tyre sizes according the the Rial configurator are 205/50, 215/45, 215/50, 225/45 and 235/45 all 17". My question relates to which size would be best to replace the 19" luganos I have on the car at the moment?

I have found some Continental Winter Tyres (at a reasonable cost of £82.00) in size 215/45 - but that's a circumference difference of -65mm does this make much of a difference?

Does it also matter that the car has been lowered with VW Racing springs?

as per the roccopedia link below containing winter tyre info you can fit anything from a 16" wheel upwards for winter its just that the bigger you go the less depth of tyre wall you can have as per road tyres to maintain the correct rolling radius, personally would rather have a slightly smaller alloy for winter tyres. (the fact you are running 19's now makes no difference, your wheels have the same rolling radius as my 17's its just I have a greater proportion [tyre wall depth]) the only thing that may affect the wheel size would be if you had larger brakes fitted.

is the 215/45 you have found 19"? if thats the case your speedo would be out by about 4.5% as per the tyre calculator here to remove the chance of your speedo reading out you need to maintain the same rolling radius

winter tyre info here on what sizes can be fitted.

hope that clarifies some of your questions

No the alloy replacements I have are 17" wheels, so they are 215/45/17 Continental tyres. According to your link off wheel calculations I will be down 9.91% in speed if I fit these.

Is this a bad thing?

I also noted (but my German isn't that great) that the TUV test done on the alloys I have on a Scirocco was using the 215/45/17 wheel.

putting them in myself that reads as -3.37 :? (Current 235/35/19 & New 215/45/17)

if it causes your speedo to read different (high or low) then  in my book, unless you drive around all the time with a separate sat nav that gives your gps calculated speed & ignore your speedo completely.

My bad, did it again and yes you are correct, must have put something wrong in the second box. Alas I don't have a TomTom (other companies products exist) I have the RNS510 built in. Now I realise why Conti recommended the 215/50 which only shows a difference of 0.05%.
