Manufacturers figures are compiled from a ridiculous series of environmental conditions. Rolling road with no wind resistance - there's 3 - 5% saved in fuel that a road user can't achieve.
What's the bets that VW switch off their daylights, radio, ventilation on the test models and remove the spare wheel because in some countries they will sell the car with a bottle of puncture repair gunk?
Whilst sat on a rolling road, will there actually be a driver in the car, or will all driving on the rolling road be done by wire?
If you do a lot of motorway miles with no jams, doing 70mph religiously, you might get close to the combined cycle figures in a TSI - it can be beaten in a TDI - I've had 57mpg on a 40 mile journey at a constant 80mph with no traffic when the combined figure for my car is 55mpg (140TDI CR).
35mpg average in a 1.4TSI is pretty much all you can expect to get unless you drive like a nun or do a lot of motorway miles on uncluttered roads.

Re: 1.4 tsi problems
Depends on your definition of driving like a nun. i stick to the speed limits mostly and get over 40 mpg on average which includes very little motorway driving and my daily commute is very short (roughly 10 miles each way) on which it is very stop start and varying speed limits.maisbitt wrote:35mpg average in a 1.4TSI is pretty much all you can expect to get unless you drive like a nun or do a lot of motorway miles on uncluttered roads.

Re: 1.4 tsi problems
If I lived in Berkshire i'd never stray from the speed limits - never seen so many cameras in 1 county - they always seem to be at the bottom of a steep hill, engineered to catch you out.
Your run in might have something to do with your exceptional economy as well as your general driving style. I've had 2 previous Golf TDIs and they were run in very differently with massively different oil oil and fuel consumption.
For most people who've posted on here with 1.4TSI fuel economy figures - you seem to be at the higher end of expected "real" mpg for that engine.
Do you never stray over the speed limit due to choice or how the roads are down there? Around here there is so much dual carriageway, but if your commute is single carriageway with few overtaking oppotunities then you're probably going to drive more sedately and see the mpg in the high range.
If I religiously stuck to the speed limits I could probably achieve 55mpg around the doors and 65mpg on a constant 70mpg motorway journey.

Re: 1.4 tsi problems
plenty of speed cameras and slow zones on the M4 at the mo, worst of all is the flipping speed bumps around where i live, i swear some of them should be defined as small hills.
i hope no police read but i don't religiously stick to speed limits unless round schools. one of the main reasons i like to take it easy is that i find it is a heck of a lot less stressful which it can be on all the single file roads and those people that drive at 40 everywhere (pet hate).

Re: 1.4 tsi problems (Update on Clutch Judder)
Just a quick update, any one experiencing any problems with clutch judder should insist on having the clutch replaced, the problems you will get are when taking off and in traffic the pedal and car judders until clutch disengaged, when inspected they found the plate was worn at the edges.
The new part eliminate 90% of the judder i guess the rest is down to the design.
******** make sure they dont scratch the paint work in the engine bay, reset the geometery and check tracking, and put all the undertray bolts back in, ( these problems i had to bring to the dealers attention when picked up as the techs dont give a shit )
