Security - Anyone use a steering lock?

Post by mrbojangles »

As I’m in for a long wait for my Scirocco, I’ve been considering extras I would like.

I’ve always had a steering lock on my previous cars, so although the Scirocco has an alarm etc, I’m obviously aware it’s more of a target and so anything to deter thieves seems a good idea.

Does anyone use a steering lock on their Scirocco? If so, any recommendations (my current one is a typical bar type, but the locking mechanism damaged a leather trimmed steering wheel over time)?

Cheers

The "bar" type steering locks are a waste of money as they are very easily by-passed. I've seen steering wheels "bolt cropped" to remove the bar and the locks on a lot are pretty easy to get past as well. The best steering locks are the full cover type that are Thatcham approved but these are a lot of hassle to put on and take off again and then theres the storage issue.

If someone decides they want your Scirocco then they will probably get it by stealing your keys somehow, which in most cases would also hold the key to your steering lock so that would nullify that scenario.

Personally I leave my trust in the cars alarm and immobiliser and hope nobody wants to burgle my house for my keys. :)

If you are truly worried about your car being stolen then you're far better investing in a system that requires some sort of keycode before you start the car. I think Clifford manufacture some.

I really would not bother with one as above, there mostly useless, some are even used to break the steering lock, the only one I would consider is the Disklok, an issue with steering locks is hijacking, whilst your busy undoing it someone could sneak up on you, or if you need to make a quick get away you can't !

Yeah speaking from experience - steering wheel locks do nothing if they break into your house and steal your keys..........

.... Unless you've got a dummy key on your car keyring and the real key for the steering lock is tucked away somewhere inside the car :hehe:

Buys you a bit of time and stalls the thief if nothing else.

I use a disklok and have for many years. I don't find it any hassle really.

Hello Deacon,
do you confirm that DiskLok fits well on actual Scirocco steering wheel? I was about to purchase one but the manufacturer doesn't list the Scirocco as supported model and when I asked them they reply that it SHOULD fit but were not completely sure about that.

Thanks in advance for reply :-)

These steering locks are a waste of time on a new car with Thatcham level security for both immobiliser and alarm - only a true expert could get one of these away without the keys, and even then it'd probably take so long to bypass the security that they'd just lift it and tow it away on the back of a breakdown truck.

The steering lock may come in handy to use as a road rage defense weapon, but in everyday use it'll probably just scratch your steering wheel.

Best security measure you can do is keep your car keys safe.

yup i have a disklok and it works fine on the Roc steering wheel (as long as u dont get the small one - there are 2 sizes from memory) - EDIT: I have the small up to 39cm version and it fits fine.

for extra protection ive also had my car Supaglassed by Pentagon. Expensive but you should look into it if you're really worried about it.

Thank you very very much, GTI2Rocr, I also didn't knew the Supaglass product. Seems a really good idea, not only for thieves but for passive security also :-)

Best regards.
