Cracked Windscreen

Post by markwalker69 »

Anyone else had any problems with windscreen cracks !!!!!!

I found a crack on the bottom edge of my windscreen and on a closer inspection the glass at the seal point was jagged, it was right under the wiper so was not visible until I cleaned the glass with Autoglym. I took my car to Autoglass who told me that there was no evidence of impact, there was water in the seal and it was a stress fracture possibly due to faulty fitting, I then drove to my vw dealer and got hold of the service manager who agreed and it's going to be replaced under waranty next thursday.

Hi Mark, not had the same 'fault' on mine, but did have to get my windscreen replaced when an errant stone flew up and cracked the screen. First time that had ever happened to me, but I was surprised how easily it cracked as although the stone hit quite hard I did not expect it to crack.

No cracks for me but I have got more chips and scratches in 12 months than I had in 10 years of my old Ford. The glass does seem 'soft'.

I'd not have thought that possible, but have to agree. My windscreen got hit by a stone when I'd only had the car a week. Nothing unusual in that, I drive a lot of miles, and it happens all the time. Didn't see any cracking at all but didn't go looking for a chunk out of the windscreen. Next day was frosty, and by the time I'd driven 20ish miles on very bumpy roads I noticed a crack on the windscreen. Another twenty miles in and I had a 12 inch 'smile' at the mid bottom of the screen. By the time Autoglass could fit me in a few days later it'd spread even further.

A cautionary broken windscreen related tale:

The windscreen on my old VW Passat Sport got mysteriously broken while the car was in for service with the dealer in Cheltenham (another story for another time) so I arranged for Autoglass to meet me when I was working in Bridgend one day. I left the car on the far side of the car park so they'd have lots of room, and went inside to start work. About an hour later I got a phone call asking could I meet the repairman in the car park. As I walked out to give him the keys I noticed two things: One that he'd been looking at my car, and the other that he really was a rather attractive bloke. With this in mind I walked up to him, keys held out and said in a clear voice 'Have you seen my crack?' As the 'cr' bit of crack was out of my mouth I realised what I was going to say and how it would sound, but just couldn't stop it from happening. He went bright red, and I burst out laughing and just couldn't stop, to the point where I thought I was going to puke and had to go for a sit down.

Later I apologised, and he said 'don't worry, it happens all the time' and rather optimistically I said 'really?' to which he replied 'No.' Anyway, I was very careful when the car's windscreen was fixed this time, and I still laugh every time I pull up at that site in Bridgend...

The windscreen does seem very soft - mine is peppered with tiny chips that are too small to repair. Point of impact determines whether the widscreen will crack in most cases, unless you've had a large stone flicked up at speed.

If you get hit away from the edge, the windscreen has enough flex to absorb the impact energy, but if it gets hit near the edge, then the unflexing glass takes the full brunt and you get the cracks appearing.

Just washed mine and after ownership of just 6 weeks have noticed a number of scratches on the screen. Just like Kev more scratches in 6 weeks than I've had in 6 years with my other cars.
