new car....

Post by v4nisher »

Hi fellow forum members

I am not new to the VAG scene having 6 VW golfs previous.

I'm currently a VW GOlf GT mark 5 owner (170bhp) who's about to trade in for a scirroco. I'm definately having a GT spec but not sure whether to have the 140 GT, 170GT.

I am almost certain in the colour, in my opinion the rising blue is the best colour for a roc, with a golf my best colours where silver, blue, and steel grey, i also think the shape of the car also determines which colour looks the best on it, but again thats my opinion.

I have only ever had one test drive in a 140GT, and to be honest didnt think there was much that difference between a mark5 or mark 6 140 GT, to the roc 140....Or am i being deluded? lol

I am definatley getting a new roc, april/may time.

Any advice, suggestions? Anything at this early stage I should look out for in the 140/170 GT models? I am also looking to remap, which ever model I get......

Looking forward to your replies

Hi v4nisher

the only differences between the different models all having the 140 engine would be those caused by any differences in the weight & setup of the car really so probably not alot. & things to look out for, if you go for a DSG make sure its had the recent recall if it requires it.

I'd say 170 but I never got to test drive the 140, only the 170 and the 2.0tsi.

If your already planning on going for a GT spec then price wise theres not alot in it.

V4nisher: My last car was a GT Sport 170 TDI Golf, and i'm currently in a 140TDI Scirocco. The new common rail (CR) units are so much smoother than the old PD ones (as found in the MK5 Golf). The power delivery with a CR is a lot smoother throughout the range, and the turbo doesn't run out of puff at 3500 revs like the PD units do. In terms of power, the CR units might feel a little less powerful when the turbo kicks in, but this is just an illusion, again, down to the smoother power delivery.

I always found my 170PD to have quite a long turbo lag, then a very rough surge of power, and it was plagued with DPF problems (which haven't manifested themselves on the 140CR).

Theres a slip road I get onto near the start of my drive to work, in my old 2.0 TDI 140 PD GT Golf (MK5) I used to hit 70mph at the end of it, then when I got the 170 PD GT Sport Golf (MK5), it would get to 80mph at the same point. The 140CR Scirocco hits 78mph at the same point.

I bought my Scirocco when the 170 was not yet out, but was announced, and I had the opportunity to jump the queue with mine (an old uni mate who works at the dealership got me a deal on a new one coming in, due to a dealership car swap, so it wasn't part of their dealership Scirocco allocation). After going for a test drive, I was comparing the 170PD to a 140CR and didn't see much difference in performance, apart from far stronger 6th gear acceleration in the 170PD. I wasn't prepared to wait for an "order from scratch" 170CR, nor was I prepared to pay the £1100 list price difference between the 2 (and I wouldn't have had much of a discount on one the dealership would've ordered in, so more like £2100 difference to me on the deal I got).

I never got to compare 170PD to 170CR, but if you compare 170PD to 140CR, you'll be surprised how small the gap is between the 2. I don't regret not getting the 170CR unit, the only thing you'll miss is the 6th gear acceleration, which makes for a lazier drive (you'll have to knock down to 4th more often in the 140CR). With a slightly bigger turbo on the 170CR unit compared to the 140CR, again, i'd expect to have more turbo lag, but it should be a lot smoother than the 170PD unit.

If you would possibly be prepared to pay the gap between the 140 GT and the 170 GT then you need to take a test drive in the 170 (or a Golf GTD/Audi A3 TDI170 if a 170 Scirocco is unavailable).

Thanks all for the detailed responses.......no doubt I will let you know which i will finally pump for.....but if its looking like the 140 is not thatmuch a difference from the 170, and with the remap, it will make it even more so powerful....
