Hi all, Just been thinking, I will be retro fitting the RNS 510 when it eventually comes (don’t get me going), it seems a fairly easy job to do but where does the gps antenna go ?
I don’t want it stuck on the top of the dashboard & will the antenna get a signal if its placed under the dash.
Thanks in advance for you reply’s

Re: RNS 510 ANTENNA
Will be fine under the dash.
I run a bluetooth gps reciever in the arm rest (using the mdi for usb power) for mobile positioning and datalogging and it works fine.

I just striped mine to a bar / supportbeam thing in the empty space behind and above the radio.
Nothing visible, no cables to route and hide

Re: RNS 510 ANTENNA
Just my two pennies worth....
As I understand GPS reception, it is a line of sight signal. I don't doubt that placing the antenna under the dash will work (people have obviously done it) but I do think the signal will be attenuated and may cause it to lose sat lock earlier that it otherwise would in bad conditions.
Second thought is that I believe the roof (shark fin) aerial is actually the GPS aerial and that on cars without the RNS unit it is just a 'dummy' that's installed (both the DAB and AM/FM are in the nearside rear window). I was thinking of looking into getting the real working version of sharks fin and retrofitting it to run my Garmin which I'd like to place in the 12V socket area of the car rather that stuck up on the windscreen. If anyone knows if this is possble I'd appreciate any feedback you techie guys have.
Cheers

Here is a pic. I put the antenna up there in the back. The radio unit only fills about two thirds the dept of the hole.
The GPS usually have 8-10 satelites fixed and 2-3 more in view. It finds it self in 3-5 sec.
