I suspect weak struts(although they seem to hold the hatch up quite well), but does anyone have another suggestion?

Opening the rear hatch
When I try to open the hatch, it 'pops' but does not open. I can push it closed, and wedge my fingertips under it when I push the button, then I can open it. I assume this is not 'right', but I have only one example here.
It's a German market 2009 model.

Sounds like you need new bump stops. They are spring loaded.

Re: Opening the rear hatch
I will second that opinion (given by Matrix7764) - this was happening to my 'Rocco too.

Even after replacing my old bump stops with new ones, this still happens sometimes. I guess it's just a 'Rocco quirk...
