Im new to the forum and was wondering if you could help me out. Im looking at ordering a scirocco in the next couple of months (got to secure a new job interview first!!), but i can not deicide whether to buy the 170 tdi or the 2.o tsi. Obviously the differences are with the MPG , but im not sure if id buy a coupe car like the scirocco soley based on better MPG??
Obviously the bills would be lower but would i be missing out on performance??
Please can you let me know what you think, and some advice please!!
Hi Greg,
Personally speaking, it is petrol all the way. In a car like the Scirocco that diesel 'clatter' on startup would be enough to put me off. Think it depends on your circumstances, if like me you do under 5000 miles a year I think petrol would be the choice, but if you are pounding up and down motorways and doing say more than 10000 a year, then maybe the diesel is for you.
For some reason I just do not like diesels, they have improved a lot over the years but the petrol engines are better suited to the Scirocco in my opinion. I think Autocar had similar views when they tested the diesel.
Off the mark, the 2.0TSI is quicker, but once you get going, there's really nothing between them. Acceleration in the overtaking range, the differences are negligible - for 30PS less, the TDI makes up for it in torque. The TDI only loses out noticeably from a standstill beause there's too much torque and not enough grip (170TDI Audi TT does 0-60 in 7.5s, as it has Quattro to help with the grip).
As for "start-up clatter" - the CR TDIs barely have any, and once they're going, they're quieter than the petrols as they're geared higher - 80mph in a TDI Scirocco is only 2020rpm. If you want the economy then get the TDI, if not, TSI. The TDI pulls well in every gear - if you're doing 60mph in 6th, it's barely worth knocking it down to 4th as the acceleration in 6th is almost as great - makes for a lazier drive.
The 170TDI is pricey though - how can VW price it £400 more than the 2.0TSI? This was never the case with Golf GTI vs 170 TDI GT/GT Sport. The new MK6 Golf GTI is a little more expensive than the GTD - that's the way it should be.
Greg - if the new job allows, get it ordered before Sept - VW are planning another price rise (assuming you are in the UK).
2013 - Tornado Red MK7 Golf GTD on order
2011-2013 - Rising Blue 170GT
2009-2011 - Pewter Roc 140GT
2007-2009 - Tornado Red Golf 170TDI GT
2005-2007 - Black Pearl Golf 140TDI GT
2003-2005 - Black Pearl Polo 1.9TDI
If I were you I'd go and book a test drive of both engines that’s the only way you'll know what you like.
Other things to take into account are the running costs, i.e. cost of buying the car, tax, insurance, fuel and depreciation. If money is not a concern its a no brainer order a Scirocco 2.0L TSi.
