Hi all I recently bought my first scirocco 2.0 diesel 140 bhp. A day after I bought it I was going down the dual carriageway and then came to a stop at the traffic lights and noticed lots of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I'd say it probably lasted a few minutes whilst the lights were red. I continued my journey and had no more blue smoke and the car drove absolutely fine. Anyway I rang the garage where I bought it from and they said drop it straight down and suggested that it was trying to 'regen'. Do you think it is correct? Since the garage have rang and said they had taken it for a long drive and confirmed it was a regen. I'm just a little worried as from my understanding blue smoke is normally oil burning? the car may have been sat for a while on the forecourt but would that have caused this? TIA.

It could have been a "regen", although the smoke tends to white when it's happening. As you say, blue smoke normally signifies oil burning. Just keep an eye on the oil level to confirm whether it's using oil or not.
For reference, you can tell when the car is doing a "regen" as it sounds a little rougher and the idle increases to around 1,100 rpm from the normal 780rpm. Also, if you switch off the car before a "regen" is complete the radiator fans run on for approx 5 mins after the car is switched off.

Thanks. From what I have read and what you have said it sounds like it was doing a 'regen' however I dont understand why it would puff out blue smoke when it was doing it. It happened 5-10 minutes from when I started it up so it would have been up to temperature to trigger a regen and the fan did stay on when when I turned it off also the mpg did drop during that journey. The garage did a oil and filter change before I bought the car and I'm wondering whether they over filled with the oil a little causing the blue smoke. My mechanical knowledge is fairly basic and I dont know these cars so dont know if that sounds logical? It has 3 months warranty on everything apart from tyres maybe it would be wise to get an extended warranty as I think with the little millage I do would not be enough over 12 weeks for the possible problem to develop into something major.

They are quite smokey when the "regen" takes place as the particulates are burnt off the DPF, however as I said, in my experience the smoke is more of a white colour. I guess you just have to keep an eye on it.

Okay thankyou! Yeah I'll just have to keep an eye on the oil.
