Stupid noob question about unlocking the boot

Post by DubSteve68 »

Hi All,

Right, my old Leon just had a two-button keyfob, single-press to unlock the driver's door, double-press to unlock everything - and the other button locks everything in one go. Now I've a keyfob with three buttons. This is where I'm starting to feel stupid because the obvious buttons do what I'd expect but the middle button does nothing, same with both keyfobs. It's clear what it should do but it doesn't.

The hatch release button on the driver's door works fine and the boot pops as it should but I can't remotely open it from the key. Should I be able to or is this just how it is with Sciroccos? The manual suggests it should but when I press the fob button sweet FA happens and I can only open using the interior release button. Like I said it's the same for both fobs, suggesting they're fine, and the door lock/unlock buttons work fine too.

I've a micro-CAN cable on the way but I want to know if there's actually a problem or not before I start digging around. I suspect there is but I need someone to tell me either way.

Cheers, DubSteve

The boot doesn’t pop but unlocks. You have to press the VW badge to actually open it.

Hi. You should have 3 buttons on your key fob. The middle button is boot. You must press and hold it for your boot to open. NOT the vw sticker.Image

Steve,

When you press and hold the middle of the three key fob buttons, it will release the securing latch on the tailgate, as stated in the previous post. At this risk of stating the obvious, the car does not have a power system which will fully raise the tailgate, you have to grab the metalwork and lift it manually.

If your tailgate is not "popping up" about half an inch to allow you to put your fingers under and lift, it could be that the spring thingies which push the tailgate up (when you release the latch via the key fob) are somehow jammed or otherwise not doing what they ought to.

Assuming I have interpreted your original post correctly, can i suggest:
a) Stand at the back of the car
b) Hold the middle fob button down until you hear the boot latch "release"
c) If the tailgate does not "pop up" the magic inch, put one hand under the tailgate, press the key fob button again and as soon as you hear the release activate, lift the tailgate open

There should be a rubber bump stop on the underside of the tailgate, one either side, plus matching "landing pads" on the sides of the boot opening in the main bodyshell. Compress the bump stops by hand to see if they actually work or are jammed.

Give it a go, let us know how you get on!

Cheers but are you actually a Golf driver by any chance? My old Leon was nearly the same, use button to unlock then lift the Seat badge to open the hatch.

Thanks Deanrocco and Deagol, I actually managed to work it out during my lunch break using a combination of swearing at the car and rage-pressing the button. Just got back and found your answers, many thanks fellas

I actually feel a whole lot less stupid now as there is no mention of this in the manual, and the only time "press and hold" is mentioned is regarding convenience locking/unlocking.

From the manual...

Unlock the vehicle - Press [unlock] button. Press and hold for convenience opening.
Lock the vehicle - Press [lock] button. Press and hold for convenience closing.
Unlock the tailgate - Press [tailgate] button.

Cheers all, DubSteve

It depends on what year your car is, pre-facelift the boot pops when you press and hold the centre button on the keyfob. Post facelift, I believe it just unlocks using the centre keyfob button and you have to open using the VW badge in the bootlid.
