Ahoy mateys!
I only just noticed this on mine yesterday, which is strange because i have 4.5k on it now. At full lock i get a grinding kind of noise, sounds like tyres rubbing in the arches. It's the same left and right. If you apply full lock and let the car roll slowly you hear it easily. Would any of you chaps be so good as to go check this on yours please? i'm wondering if they all do it or if mine needs some attention. In the meantime, i'm going to see what tyre clearance there is, if any at full lock.
if it is tyre rub it doesn't bode so well for the R model, they'll have to limit the lock which is annoying.
My car is a 2.0 GT, unmodified.

Hmmm, well i can't figure it out. There's loads of clearance, and it's not making the noise today from cold. it must have been the steering motor or something making this noise, it didn't sound too happy. The car was well warm when it started doing it, i'd been on the roads up around kielder giving it some. I hate those intermittent noises, noone believes you!
Re: Steering noise at full lock
Mine does it too. Loads of previous cars I have have done it too. I was told by someone ages ago that it's to do with the angle of the tyres when at full lock which means that they effectively drag across the floor and so cause the noise.

It was doing it on gravel yesterday though, so it wasn't that tyre scrubbing noise (i know what you mean though-it's the caster angle that creates that camber). I'll not worry about it, can't get it to do it at the moment anyway. it really sounded like something in the steering, like the motor noise.

I agree, haven't tried the Roc yet, but my old MR2 Roadster did exactly the same thing.Deacon wrote:Mine does it too. Loads of previous cars I have have done it too. Re: Steering noise at full lock
does the sound only appear when you're holding the wheel at full lock ie trying to turn the wheel beyond it's limit? If so i reckon it's normal, just the PAS pump. If you try lessening the pressure on the steering wheel and it goes away then bob's your uncle. If the above doesn't match yours then dunno, ask your dealer?

Re: Steering noise at full lock
I can't get it to do it now anyway, it wasn't due to holding it against the lock stop, different noise. it was only when the car was actually rolling, more of a grinding sound which is why i thought it must be tyre rubbing in the arch. Oh well.
