Steering wheel and boot rattle - help a girl out

Post by striker200181673 »

My Roc has developed the dreaded boot rattle over the weekend. I’ve had the passenger shelf, spare wheel etc out and checked the struts and all seem fine. It’s starting to drive me crazy, is there anything I can do? The steering wheel has developed a rattle too but knowing where this comes from I’m just going stick a small piece of foam into the space and job done. The boot rattle however, is being fixed at the moment by turning the music up full! :grumpy:

Have you checked the bump stops are adjusted correctly on either side of the boot lid. If they are seized / missing / not adjusted correctly you get a rattle. They are cheap as chips to replace.

I had a knock / rattle that sounded if it was coming from the boot and it turned out to be a the ball joint on the drop link.

Sorry for my ignorance but where will I find the bump stops? Trying to be more independent with my cars but it’s a long process!

No worries, the bump stops are the 2 black rubber things that you see on the bottom edge of the bootlid. This has come up before and I have had the issue in the past. They can be adjusted with an allen key and as Cuprabob mentions, they are about £5 each if you need new ones. I got my dealer to post them to me, as it was cheaper than driving down there! Take a look at this link also.

So I've managed to have a quick look and it appears the clunking noise is coming from the left hand side of the boot. There is a bit of give in it when I push down on the boot when its closed. Opening it up, it appears that the left boot strut is much looser than the other side. Is it possible to tighten this or is a replacement required? On the way to work this morning I developed a mega vibration noise from the passenger side door. This is the worst car ive ever had for rattles.

You should be able to adjust the bump stop with an allen key (as per post above). I agree rattles are annoying and can seriously put you off a car, but the boot rattle is a simple fix. I don't think you will need new bump stops, just adjustment.

So just an update. I've loosened the bump stop as suggested, hasnt made any difference whats over. Tried various adjustments but still hasnt fixed the issue. Taken everything out of the boot, including parcel shelf. I'll be damned if i take it to VW who want to charge £80 just to diagnose the issue.
