Timing belt and water pump?

Post by Steffydog »

Hi, I can’t see anything about this on the forum, is my dealer having a giggle, I have a 2.0 tdi blue motion 2013, it’s got just 42k on the clock, he says it’s due a belt and pump in a few months (when it hits 5 years old I’m guessing) costing £499 (£449 each, but £499 if done together)

Is that right, on a 5 year old car with 42k?

Cheers, and any advise would be fab.

There are a number of threads on the forum on the subject.

Basically it's a VW UK recommendation. If you check the service booklet it only stipulates a mileage (140,000 miles) but no time interval. Some would say it's just a revenue generator for VW UK
Personally, I don't think it's worth taking the risk.

If you decide to get it done then pay the extra a have the water pump replaced as they can fail.

£449 is the cost to change the cambelt and tensioner and it's an extra £50 to have the waterpump done at the same time.

Hi, my bad, I did use the search, but went with timing belt, not cam belt, probably why I didn’t find anything.

Cheers, I’d go with both if and when. But 42k seems a bit keen to me, I’ll have a nosey at the links. Thanks a lot for those.

vw also offer price matching within a certain radius of the dealership (think it's 5 mile but not 100%). You just have to show them a quote and it has to be using genuine VW parts that are quoted for. But could save you a few quid and then you get a dealer service. Just something worth noting. Mine is 5 in September so I'll have to do the same then.

VW did my timing belt and water pump in December and price matched and did them both for £400.
