Strange electrical failure today...What size battery?

Post by 3t3p »

Wanting to plan ahead should I need a new battery as strange turn of events today.

Had not used the car for one week. Started up fine this morning drove six miles total with one park/restart.

Fiddled about with a new dashcam, plugged it into cigarette lighter to let it charge up for all of 2-3 mins total. After camera adjusted on windscreen car would not start. No power to starter motor. ESP and airbag light flashing and 'check rear reverse lights' warning came on as well as a continuous high pitched warning type tone. All VDU lights flashing with rapid relay-closing sounds.

To make matters worse it seems the cable to the bonnet release has snapped! The release lever is completely slack with no feel to it. So I couldn't get into the car.

Called out RAC who jacked car up but still couldn't get into engine bay.

He connected directly to the starter motor from under the car and it started up. Left it >30mins to charge and car seems to start fine now. The rear LED lights are fine.

Regardless it needs to go into VW to release the bonnet. I have no idea as to the status of the battery having bought the car used from VW 3 years ago or so I don't know if the battery has even been replaced. They may suggest a new battery if it is worn and would rather get my own good quality one if needed for a better price and fit it myself.

I'd like to keep the stock foam/box surround for the battery too.

The manual says nothing about battery model type.

I'm thinking 075 or a 096?

Cheers

74 Ah will be fine, from factory they come with not that good quality batteries.
I don't have the dimensions of the battery now but can take a look tomorrow.

You can get an economy battery from TPS for around £70 for a 096 fitment. It's an Exide battery like the OEM one supplied with the car. Personally I'm not a fan of Exide batteries and prefer Bosch or Varta. I replaced the one in my diesel with a Bosch S5 096 which has the dimensions 278mm x 175mm x 190mm. It is 72Ah and a CCA of 780A.

These guys are quite competitive on price

Nice one thanks it was the battery size I wanted to know. I'll probably go BOSCH or Varta too
