Cutting out - engine management light

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
On two occasions now, I've come to a standstill in traffic and the car has just cut out and the dash lights have flashed on. The engine management light has then come on after re-starting and stayed on for a while before going back off. The second time this happened (last weekend) I had just travelled from Dorset to the Midlands. The EML stayed on for a few hours before going off again. I'm back in the Midlands this weekend and worried in case it happens again.
Any advice?

Have the car scanned with VCDS to see what fault codes are stored as a starting point and take it from there.
