Unusual noises.

Post by Tenko73 »

I get an intermittent noise occasionally when i pull away.

The only way i can describe it is.... A low pitch creaking/screeching noise from the front end.

As i said it's intermittent and mainly happens when i pull away from standstill. More often on a cold day. It also happens almost every time i reverse onto my driveway.

I have a feeling it's brake discs but i'm really worried it's something more sinister.

Does this only happen with the clutch partly engaged?

I’m thinking of the clutch thrust bearing, which can squeal if it’s wearing out.

Have a search on you tube, there are some scirocco/golf clutch noise videos on there. See if they sound the same.

Hi Jeff,

They seem to be mostly pedal squeaks and rattles. This noise only happens when the the clutch is fully released and the car starts to move.

Just wondering if it's a belt slipping (alternator maybe). You hear that on older cars a lot in the winter as they slip on the dew on the metal pulleys.

To confirm if it is the alternator belt slipping, load the alternator up by putting on the lights, heated seats and rear demister and blip the throttle. If it's slipping it will give a "chirp" or "squeak" noise.

If it's just when the car is moving off it could be a seized brake caliper causing the brake to bind slightly.

Kev - It's happening when the car's warm after a run. I could be wrong but, unlikely to be moisture on the belt. I will try your suggestion though.

Bob - Brakes were my first thought. They squeak slightly when braking in rush hour traffic.
