DSG Positions, P usage?

Post by Zanic L3 »

Hello,

I've recently got a Scirocco 2.0 TSI with a DSG gearbox (it's currently in a garage waiting for the plates). I've never driven an automatic before.

I know that the D means for drive where it will do all the shifting for you and if you push the lever to the side you can upshift and downshift with the lever.

S stands for sports where I can control the gears with the shifters behind the wheel.

R means reverse.

But now I'm confused by the P which stands for parking, when do I use that? I drove it to the garage and left it in the P stand before turning off, but what is the purpose for? I thought it engaged the handbrake but theres already a hanbrake, I can just leave it on neutral as well?

When the car was in D and I stopped and pulled the handbrake on. It felt like the clutch was a little bit slipping, and idk if I slightly was giving it a bit of an input.

Also, is there a way to get the windows up after exiting the car and not having the key in the ignition?

Park is for when the car is parked. The car will not start if it is not in Park and the keys will not come out of the ignition if it's not in Park. Park also immobilises the drivetrain. You don't really need to use the handbrake that much. At traffic lights just hold it on the foot brake and if waiting for a slightly longer period put it into Neutral and use the handbrake.

In Drive, if you nudge the gearstick to the left you get manual mode and can change up and down by nudging the gearstick forward and back. You can also use the paddles. By using the paddles in Drive or Sport it temporarily switches to manual mode and defaults to Auto after 20 secs or if you pull and hold the right paddle.

Sport is also an Auto mode but it goes to the redline before changing up and changes down much earlier.

If you have autoclosure enabled, it's a setting in the convenience menu, if you press and hold the lock button the windows will close as will the sunroof, if you have it. The opposite happens if you press and hold the unlock button.

In addition to the excellent answer above, if you leave it in D and just pull the handbrake, that will be working against the auto-creep you get from being in D, which is the slip you were feeling. That creep is handy for manoeuvring in car parks etc but you don't want it the two fighting each other so keep your foot on the brake or go to N or P.

And never do this, unless you want your clutch to disintegrate. (an accidental few seconds won't do any harm, but don't do this on a regular basis)
Also when stopped always press the brake pedal properly - you will learn that if you only press the brake pedal lightly you can feel the clutch is still engaged and the engine trying to pull....this again is grinding up the already fragile clutches in these dry dual clutch DSG's.

Does the 2009 VW 2.0TSI (200hp) has a dry clutch? I believe it is not (wet clutch?) and it needs oil changed every 40-60k miles right?

Ah yes my bad, the 2.0 TSI uses a wet clutch DSG - which does have a 40k miles oil service interval.
I just went by your profile info that says you have a 1.4 TSI 160, which would be the 7 speed dry dsg.

In any case the above info still applies, but is far less of a concern as the wet clutch can take far more abuse.

Yep, any idea where I can change my profile settings, I can't find it
