Oil pressure low causing orange engine management light?

Post by JackaCarter »

Hi everyone,

After some help, i have a 1.4 TSI and had the timing chain changed 2 months ago as it had stretched... at 60,000 miles, brilliant! So they changed that and i then had a oil leak due to them not fitting a seal properly, again brilliant! So since then the engine management light keeps coming on, i take it to the garage they dont do much but turn the light off, a week later its back on again. So enough is enough and i take it down to the garage kick off big time and they say there is only one fault on the diagnostics now and its that the oil pressure is too low but apparently not low enough to bring the red oil light up. I am wondering if anyone knows as to why this is happening? if this is what could of caused the chain to stretch?how much is this gonna cost me to sort? I want to sell the car but cant bring myself to sell it with the problems its currently got. Any help would be very much appreciated as i am at a loss and its already cost me £800 to get the chain done!
Thanks in advance
Jack

Hi Jack,

There are a lot of technically minded people on the forum and I am hoping that they will have much better guidance than I can offer, but a recent experience might be of use to you in the very short term.

How much oil is in the car - is it at the bottom of the dipstick measure, half-way, or right at the top? I ask because I also have a Touran and that recently whinged about oil, with a yellow oil light, not red. It's a 2.0 litre diesel , not a 1.4 petrol - please bear that in mind until you get a more scientific response ! (Edit - I see that your light is Engine Management?)

A bit of a rummage on t'Internet prompted the "dipstick" issue and when I checked, the oil was at rock bottom, maybe even too low. One top up later and after a short and gentle journey to get the oil around the system, the light had gone and not been back since.

Maybe your 1.4 petrol is suffering from the same situation, especially if the garage might have been too tight-fisted to properly refill the oil levels? But you are right to be concerned and I hope you get a comprehensive response from a competent member soon.
