Engine management light car wont fire up.
Driving home today my engine management light came on then promptly turned off then the EPC light came on and stayed on car ran very roughly seemed a cylinder wasn't firing, once home there is quite a strong smell of fuel. after leaving it for an hour went to restart and the car will turn won't start ( it turns over) any idea's? It's a 2.0 TSI DSG 0n a 59 plate with 36K full history with no mods at all. Had the major service last May.

Probably a faulty fuelinjector.

Faulty Engine Speed Sensor / Crank Sensor would be my guess.

Thanks both Hopefully I'll get a mechanic round with a code reader to have a look.... by the way which code reader should I be looking for to read the codes on my Scirocco, I've looked online and there seems to be so many, can you recommend?

The only one I can recommend is the official vcds, but it is a bit pricey.

A few people on here use this one and seem to like it.

To be honest, if you don't need the advanced features a Bluetooth one from Amazon + the Torque app will get you by and save you £50 plus.
I've got VAGCOM + a BT code reader. I use the BT one more tbh as it's less of a faff

Thanks, Tried the car this morning and it actually ran albeit very lumpy. Had similar on old 4x4 years ago and that was a simple HT lead, Hoping this turns out a fairly cheap fix. I'm off to see my usual mechanic as my first port of call tomorrow to see what he can do.

You might be lucky and just be a coilpack.lloydie63 wrote:Thanks, Tried the car this morning and it actually ran albeit very lumpy. Let us know how you get on.

Re: Engine management light car wont fire up.
Bought 1 coilpack today and fitted, changed each in turn and didn't seem a great improvement also cleaned the plugs 3 of the four seemed quite dark and restarted, all warning lights went out but engine still seemed quite lumpy, after 5 mins EML flashed on and off so I turned off the engine started again a bit later and eventually the EML came on and stayed on followed by the EPC light. ... car on start-up ran at about 1200 rev then dropped back and settled at 700rpm, this time when running I didn't get the strong smell of petrol. Anyway I'm sure it possibly more than one coilpack gone(?) but I'm taking it in Friday to see if my trusted mechanic can get some codes and pin point the fault.

Re: Engine management light car wont fire up.
Got my car back today and all seems well. My usual indi mechanic plugged the car in to his PC and found a fault on #3 cylinder he plugged in the coil pack i bought and made no difference he than asked when was the last time I changed the plugs as they looked to him like they had been in the car for some time, I said VW garage carried out a major service last May in which a plug change is carried out (according to their website info anyway, he smiled when i said this ) He fitted a new set of plugs and he said no codes have come up on his PC and nothing showing on the car. Took for a 30mile run and all seems well. total bill £81

Re: Engine management light car wont fire up.
Check the wording of the Major Service. They only change them if they are scheduled to be changed, which is either every 40k / 4yrs or 60k / 6yrs.lloydie63 wrote:Got my car back today and all seems well. The whole major service thing is a con. I always just get a minor service and then tell them what additional things I want changed based on schedule. That way there is less chance of paying for something that is not done.
Glad you got it sorted.
