I have spent all day on here today as i'm viewing what i'm hoping is my dream Rocco tomorrow. I am concerned as i've seen a lot of stories about a chain tensioner fault. I'm viewing a 2010 1.4 TSI tomorrow, but my huge worry is it is a private sale. I've spent over a year saving for a car I love and now i'm terribly worried about an engine failure, is this something that will DEFINITELY happen to this model inevitably? Any help, tips, advice etc would be greatly appreciated

I haven't owned the 1.4 (and personally never would) there are way to many issues with that engine for me to ever be comfortable handing my hard earned over for it. The 2.0 (both petrol and diesel) while having issues are much more reliable units.
In the end you pay your money and take your chance.

It turns out the car (whilst still under manufacture warranty) has had the full engine rebuild.. Would this make you feel better if you were to purchase? I've been looking for so long to find one. I have fallen in love with this too

Depends what year it was rebuilt - if it was 2012 onwards, then the newer KS pistons (as opposed to Mahle) would have been fitted - these are far better and don't suffer from premature failure.
I am referring to the 160ps twincharger version of the 1.4 tsi with regards to piston failure.
If you have been looking at the 120ps version then i wouldn't worry about issues on that model. Piston failure doesn't occur on the 120ps, and the chain tensioner failure is very rare on any post 2009 1.4 TSI engines. It primarily affected earlier design 1.4 tsi twincharger engines found in the golf mk5.
The only thing to do with regards to the chain is, if its a manual never leave it in gear when parked - this is the number one cause of chain failure on TSI engines (barring the 2.0 TSI which has its own tensioner issues)
