I am having the same problem. I am no expert but I believe it is the Bluetooth unit being too old and its technology is out of date.
I have just purchased a new unit and will be installing it today. I have a registered copy of VCDS but have not used it yet. I believe I will have to set it up or something.
At present I have no idea how to do this but will have researched it by the end of the day and hopefully sorted it out.
I will let you know how it goes on.

Well I did it. I replaced the Bluetooth unit and checked it with vcds. it was not coded correct but I sorted it with vcds and now it all works fine. the music also works through Bluetooth and shows all the track/artist info.
only downside was it cost £200 for the new Bluetooth unit

Just picked up a 2011 Scirocco R with the same unit & issue. Am I correct in thinking it's the module under the seat that needs to be replaced? If so, which module did you purchase & where from?

many thanks!

Edit: I also cannot access the 'phone' menu, the unit just mutes. Did this also rectify this issue?

Hi.
Yes it is the model under the seat. I got mine off eBay but got the one with all the cables. I only needed the module. As I will sell it with all the fitting kit. ( I works with my Samsung phone and blackberry's.
I didn't have any muting issues so can't comment sorry.
