Loss of Power

Post by Daveee93 »

Started my car yesterday, very noisy. As soon as I started moving there was a complete lack of power and it was very delayed. Anyone have any ideas? No warning light on at all yesterday :?

Being taken to VW tomorrow and under Warranty so hopefully no horrendous costs although it didn't sound good at all

Cheers

Sounds as of it may be misfiring. You might be lucky and it's just a coilpack but with it being the twincharger it might be a piston / compression issue. Either way the warranty should cover it.

It did actually misfire last year (obviously its the 1.4 engine!) and they fitted a new coilpack then. Although that did seem a lot different, it was only a loss of power once I got over 4k Revs and it was only for a few seconds where the engine light flashed and then went off. Here it was like the engine was stuggling to even get off the line then would be loud, slow and unresponsive. I've read a couple people saying it could be the turbo?

If it's unresponsive at lower revs it's more likely to be the supercharger as opposed to the turbo. It's such a complex and unique engine it's best not to speculate and wait to see what they come back with once scanned.

A turbo issue would only effect power above 3000rpm, could be a supercharger issue....

Whats the idle like? - broken piston / compression issue would result in it idling like a bag of spanners.

That's what I thought, Supercharger is still making it's noise

Sounds terrible when you start the car up and then makes a whirling noise through the exhaust at idle and the engine shakes

Well its misfiring if the engine is shaking - hopefully just a coil pack or injector problem.....although if I were putting a bet on, i'd say the piston is cracked and compression is down on one of the cylinders.

Regardless should be fully covered by the extended warranty.

Apparently it was to do with the timing chain and tensioner which had stretched and was out of sync. It's currently at £500 and they've only just found the problem and taken it apart so glad I bought the extended warranty

Next Wednesday is now the expected date as the mechanic working on it has "put his back out". It seems like excuse after excuse, first the warranty taking ages to respond, the the guy dealing with the warranty being out on sick and now this  will be almost a month it's been with VW!!
