Buying a Scirocco R

Post by Channel Switch »

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the correct section, please move it if it isn't.

I'm thinking about buying this Scirocco R:

It looks like the best one that I can find advertised at the moment. Does anybody know it and can tell me some history about it? Was the previous owner a member here?

It's got 19k miles on the clock and looks very clean. However it's 5 years old so I'm a little worried about the camshaft belt and VW stating that it should be changed after 5 years. I said this to the dealer and he stated the owners manual 120k miles number...

Thanks!

The 5 years cambelt change recommendation is from VW UK whereas the service booklet only stipulates a mileage, which is 120K.

Some would say it's just VW UK generating revenue. You pays your money, you takes your chance.

If the dealer won't have it changed, I would get them to knock money off the price to cover you getting it done. The cost is around £400.

Thanks for the reply!

That's pretty much what I was thinking.

It may be worth getting a trusted mechanic to take the cambelt covers off and giving it a look for signs of wear and tear for some peace of mind. Like you say though, I'd be taking my chances.

Yeah, cam belt at 50k or 5years is a guide; at either point there is an increased 'chance' that you may encounter problems. It's unlikely with a car in good condition, but it's still a chance. For £3-400, in my oppinion its money well spent for peace of mind; the rest of that car looks immaculate!

The buckets are rare as unicorn poop, but it does have the standard RNS 310 from a quick glance so not the most advanced multimedia system available. Still, easier to change the head unit than source a set of Recaros! If you've got the cash then go for it
