Gearbox issues

Post by Wak28 »

Hi all, in January I thought I'd treat my self to a new car, after searching and a lot of debate, I decided to go with the car that always catches my eye, the scirocco!
Shortly after purchasing the car (2ltr gt manual 6 speed) I noticed the gearbox was rather stiff in the cold weather but looked this up and it seemed normal untill the oil gets warm and flowing correctly around, so after 4 month of not being happy with the stiff gearbox it finally bust! Luckily it's still under warranty, new gearbox and clutch fitted at an expense of £5000 to the warranty company, now I've had the car back a few week now and things just seem worse!!! Changing gears from 1st to second the car feels jumpy during this change! Also it seems to want to be forced into 1st, 2nd and third gear! Selecting these gears seems to require me to put abit of effort in for the gear to ingage, then it clicks in and seems fine but to me it's asif it hasn't engaged properly!! Weird!! And this is a night mate for setting of and getting speed up! What with the jumpy chance from 1st to second requiring perfect clutch control and the stiffness of selecting gears and making sure it's selected the gear fine before I let the clutch out! All this is making it an unpleasant driving experience!!! And twice as slow at changing the lower gears! Therefore my beautiful car is now becoming embarrassing at setting of and through gear changes as its so slow!!
Now I understand there's a lot of torque in 1st to second! And the gearbox is new ( does this need time to run in?) but I can't help but wish I had my Astra gear box back!!! No trouble with gears! Never entered my mind while driving, now all I think about when driving is changing gears!!! Any help please?? Gearbox still under warranty for a year! But I'm of to France in 4 week, and I'm not looking forward to a 900 mile trip in this car!!! Thanks ben

I'm sorry to hear that. Always hurts me when somebody has problems with a car like mine. Well, I have DSG so I have no ideia about your questions. It should be precise and soft when changin gears I think. If it's under warranty, please, make them solve the problem. I have no ideia what laws are in the UK but here in Portugal, when they change any part, the new part has another 2 years of warranty. They have to make it right otherwise if it was with me here in Portugal with Portuguese law, I would ask for refund in a blink of an eye. My car, with DSG, (knock knock knock on the wood) it's been amazing. All I want to do is to floor it so that it changes gears in a split of a second. I love DSG.
Please, send it to repair or ask for refund. Hope everything will be alright. Do a video, get evidence. We never know the future and it might be evidence.

Have a nice day!

Ben,

Who did the remedial work to the 'box - was it a VW dealership or a third party garage? I would have thought that a major job like that would come with some warranty - even if it is only six months.
Maybe a polite approach to get them to sort it out? Failing that, are you going to have to look at Trading Standards and a complaint that the work does is not "fit for purpose" ? I'm no lawyer but would expect that you have some degree of redress against the mechanics/garage that replaced the gearbox.

I've had my TDi from new and it has done over 74,000 miles. Mostly two way roads with some motorway cruising and the box is fine (so far! !) Swapping cogs is easy and so is starting off in the cold or the hot weather.

Hope this helps you

Sounds like the linkage needs adjusting properly...

I would do that first before getting the warranty company involved again as it is a very simple job to do.
VW Scirocco GT 170 in shadow blue metallic with vienna leather, cruise control, parking radar, nav, bluetooth and dynaudio sound system. Remapped and shortshift fitted.

The new gear box was fitted by a main dealer who I bought the car from, not vw, I thought it might be the linkage, I have warranty with the repair but didn't want to go back in of the new box wanted running in or sommet! Looks like I will have to give them a ring then! AGAIN! Lol
Thanks
