Oil Catch Can

Post by rpsmith79 »

What with all this recent talk of TSI engines coking up, i see that one way to prevent/slow the build up is to fit a catch can

As i have only recently bought my 2.0 TSI, and having a very slight misfire, i want to do all i can to prevent/slow any more build up

So has anyone fitted a catch can, and if so any reasonably priced recommendations

Also, is it best to just buy any old cheap catch can and sort the fixings/plumbing yourself, or is it better to buy a car/engine specific kit

You can fit a catch tank or even a Pcv delete but you will have to keep emptying the tank. you also can run into problems with smoke out the exhaust. Just replace the PCV unit with an OEM one

Not sure about the PCV delete, as how is the crank case supposed to vent, surely that will only cause more problems down the line

Not a problem with having to empty the can, but there seems to be a massive difference between a universal Catch Can (£30) to these specific TSI Catch Can systems that are circa £300, not too sure why the massive price difference

Also, what would replacing the PCV with an OEM one achieve, i don't think the PCV is at fault, it's more the design on the engine fueling system at fault, i'm just trying to find a cost efficient way to reduce any future problems

I totally agree, the cost of a TSI catch tank is stupid. they just quote prices because they know people will pay it. End of the day a catch tank is a catch tank.

the PCV may be leaking from one of the seals which could be the cause of the problem. With the Catch tank you can vent from to from the crank to decrease the pressure or vent it atmospherically.

The PCV is about 30quid or there abouts I think

The majority of catch cans are just empty canisters, including these universal cheap ones for £30 - they are nothing but water vapour collectors, they don't catch much of the oil and hardly do anything to prevent intake coking.

A well designed catch can will have a baffle - some form of layered mesh or stainless steel material that looks like a metal scourer, in order to provide a large surface area for the oil droplets to form on and then drop to the bottom of the can.

These sort of cans, when designed properly will catch far more oil and will actually be of some use! - I'm building my own from one of the universal empty canister types, will document it at some point.
