Rattling noise coming from my Scirocco

Post by DeneGordon23 »

Hello all,

Just need some help and advice really.

I recently brought a 2.0 Scirocco, everything has been fine with it up until the past few days. When I start the car and leave it out of gear there seems to be a really bad rattling noise coming from the car, when I dip the clutch the noise persists but not so bad and if I Rev the noise completely goes. When I'm in a low gear and dipping the clutch the noise seems to come back. If the car has been running for 10+ minutes the noise seems to go also. Any ideas what it could be?

The car is a 59 plate with 58,000 on the clock. Would I be under some sort of manufacturers warranty with VW ?

Cheers all.

No the car would not have any warranty with VW at that age unless it was purchased as an approved used car with a warranty. Manufacturers warranty is 3 years / 60K miles, whichever occurs first.

If the car has a full VW service history then dealers and VW can pay goodwill at their discretion. More so if it's a common known problem.

I've been lucky (so far!) with my TDi but a while ago I too had an under-the bonnet rattle. Turned out it was the bonnet support stay / strut thing vibrating and banging against the bodywork between the headlamps - the clips didn't damp down the flexing of the metal rod. Usually at around 1,500 rpm either in or out of gear, rolling or stationery.

Putting a bit of sponge under it absorbs the energy and stops the flexing, so it stops the rattle.

Try to recreate the noise either with the bonnet up (and the strut in use) or after trapping a bit of sponge underneath it,

Fingers crossed that this is a cheap fix for your noise.
