Scirocco R VS Audi TTS

Post by rsgoold13 »

Good Evening All,

Recently i just got rid of my mk1 Audi TT which was running just under 270brake. I want to replace it with something newer but there just not many cars out there i like. I was pretty set on getting a mk2 Audi TTS as its fairly quick in its standard form and takes well to the usual mods. But now i have stumbled upon the Scirocco R which i also find a pretty darn sexy car with good standard power and from what i have read good tunability. Whats shocked me the most is from the vids i have watched and reviews im sold on the idea of DSG and i am normally anti autos big time.

Anyway a few questions:

1a. Does the Scirocco have the same engine as the TTS and is the DSG gearbox the same as Audis S-tronic?

1b. If the above is yes its the same, why does the Scirocco just seem so much more lively and sportier than the TTS? I appreciate that the TT is 4wd but the Scirocco (and golfs) just pop and crackle and sound a lot more turbo, the tt just seems really bland.

2. Is there any point tuning a Rocco R (if i may call it that :) ) as id be interested in stage 2, seems a lot of power for a FWD?

3. Anyone driven both can share any thoughts.

Obviously i will need to drive both to compare but im not interested in them in their standard form which will be totally different to test driving them stock.

Thanks in advance

1a) Yes, DSG is really really very good and effective, but im looking to switch back to manual due to lack of involvement.

1b) Could be to do with calibration, TT seen as a little more serious. I know the same applies for the new G7R and S3 supposing the G7R is slightly sharper.

2) Think the majority of owners have had it tuned to stage 1 (310hp usually) and stage 2 you will see anything from 320-340.
I’m getting mine APR stage 1 in the next 2 weeks, was tempted to go to stage 2, however I think an M2 is on the horizon, so unsure if its worth the extra cash.

3) Drove the RS3 but only briefly, the Scirocco seems much more up on its toes and what it lacks in competence it makes up in feel, as it has proper hot hatch characteristics.
I can get mine to oversteer without any lift off or braking if I really chuck it in. I drove a G7R for about a year prior to getting mine and the first few months I didn’t enjoy it that much to drive due to lack of traction, less composed chassis and it was down on power.
However once you get to know it and drive it more like a proper hot hatch than an A to B express train that the haldex VAG cars are you really start to enjoy it more and appreciate it. Plus it looks better than anything this side of 50k

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I suppose im used to older cars that are a bit rawer and trying to find something modern that holds as much of those characteritics as i can. Im used to my TT or mk MR2 turbo where the power delivery seems more brutal and turbo noise sounds like its located in the cabin. All these modern cars are so tame but have the same power and performance if not better. I just want to make sure i get something thats not just on paper and pub talk performance but something that can be used. Been looking at MK6 Golf R's tonight for the haldex but its still just a golf.

Tough but good choice to have between the two cars

I love the TTS but didn't really consider it when I chose the Scirocco R. Maybe I should have looked more in to them to be honest however, I love my Scirocco.

I had a Porsche Cayman S before my Scirocco so I guess I had my fill of a small sports car at the time

A sprint blue, TTS with all the toys would be lovely!
