Security Issue

Post by Rahelakhan91 »

Hello everyone,

Newbie here. Might have posted this in the wrong section.

So i've got a Scirocco GT 2012 plate - it had an RNS 315 installed and last February it got broken into and the deck was stolen.

So i repaired the damage and installed an RNS 510 and and it's happened again, Feb 2016.

CCTV footage captured everything. It happened at 9.45pm. We were at home and the car alarm didn't go off - and the hazards didn't flash. I don't know why? It's been down to VW to get the alarm checked - they said it was 100% working. So i don't understand! :?

So basically I need advice on 2 areas:

- Yes i know, it's a bad idea to get another deck installed but I REALLY WANT it! I really liked the RNS-510. Absoloutely gutted that we live in such a horrible society. Does anyone know if there's anything i can do security wise to stop it being stolen again? IF not, then what shall i replace it with?

- Anyone know why the alarm didn't go off?

Thanks everyone!

When you lock the car, confirm you are only pushing the lock button ONCE. If it's pushed TWICE the deadlocks are not engaged and the alarm is disabled.

Security screws are an idea, available online. Unfortunately they're well advertised and the crooks can also buy the corresponding bits. Or you could fit another unit and then take a drill bit to the torx screws so that they're not removable without drilling them right out. Just drill out the torx fitting part. An aftermarket alarm would be an idea (there are security flaws in the VW alarm system).

My worry about using security screws and the likes is that the thieves are already in the car before they are aware of the them and will do much more damage to the dash getting the unit out.

True, but if the intention is to stop them pinching the head unit then you have to stop them at some stage. You might not be able to stop them smashing a window by any means, so it's got to be internal security. No doubt it's the same scrotes who came back, so stop them once and they'll not come back again hopefully.

THIS is news to me! Thank you very much. Got a habit of pressing the lock key twice - to make sure it's properly locked.

The screws might be a good idea, thank you :) will look into this!

You're not the first person to misunderstand the double press thing. Conversely, it's the opposite way round on my Renault van, which is a single press to lock the doors, and a double press to really lock them. I'm not sure I know of any situation where I might not want to fully lock the vehicle, but that's the french for you.

As for aftermarket alarms, you might consider Toad security. But essentially, anything which isn't an OEM alarm is going to catch out the types who expect VW security really.

What about security film on the inside of the windows so they don't all fall into a heap when given the lightest tap. Not fully secure but will make them try harder. Available from motorsport places and I think mothercare. Goes on like a tint with hot soapy water and a squeegee but it's clear.

Replace it with something which has a removable front panel or part what is making it less atractive to steal.
