Help! Catalytic Converter problems

Hi,

I have a 2009, VW SCIROCCO GT TSI 2.0. It has today failed it's MOT due to it having a de-cat exhaust system which o was unaware of when I bought it. It failed due to not having a catalytic converter and failing the emission tests.
The price for a new cat is extreme! Is there any way around this?

You could ask the seller why they sold you a car without a legally required component. Other than that, fit a cat.

Have a look at Sports Cats from the likes of Milltek. Cheaper than OEM.

If your car doesn't have a cat fitted it must have a map to map out the post cat lambda sensors otherwise the EML would be on all the time.

Not that I would condone this route but some MOT testers will turn a blind eye to de-cats.

You need to try to find a mod friendly MOT station - if you run the car hard just before the emissions test it can pass (just), basically need to give it a good thrashing and then pull into MOT station and have it tested there and then.

I doubt very much it will pass the emissions test without a cat fitted no matter how much you thrash it just before the test.

With some Sports Cats you need to get them nice and warm to get them to pass.

I actually used to think the same, but have read many reports of people with de-cat passing their emissions this way - only just mind you, with it being very close to the permissible limit.
They would be a lot over the limit if the car was just dropped in and then tested sometime later...but running the test straight after a very hard run seems to massively reduce the emissions to the point it might just pass.

Obviously this will vary from one engine type to the next

You also need a mod friendly MOT station as technically if the car had a cat from factory and now it doesn't have one, regardless of the test results its an instant fail.
